Ive seen some instructional utubes and pdf's on the process of changing an oil pump on a gy6 150cc, but I also see that it uses a special tool to access the pump.
Has anyone rigged up a homemade tool or used a common mechanics tool to open the gy6 side up or is it absolutely necessary to use the specialized one?

I spent the money on the correct tool . I tried to get it off and started to damage the nut .
I just didn't want to have to wait to get a replacement nut .

Has anyone taken it off without a special tool?

I just rebuilt my engine and getting to the pump was easy. Are you talking about the right side case cover? I can't imagine needing a special tool or where you'd use. Rich

You talking about the starter clutch nut? There is a special tool for that but very easy to make one with a deep socket and grinder...
Make certain to mark the washer side which is facing out and that is a REVERSE THREAD NUT... I just use a piece of flat stock and a few taps with a hammer..see Rich's rebuild

I had given up on this, but now im back with a vengence and stuck here again:
its the nut behind the casing thats behind the stator. Need to remove it to access the chain holding the oil pump on.
I need to remove this damn thing, and using a chisel isnt working. I already broke the fan on the variator trying to rig a tool on it to prevent the nut moving on the other side.
Helpful ideas needed.

and sprocket, thanks as always. I dont have a grinder, but it might be easier and more useful to buy one of those than a tool ill use one or twice in my lifetime.

Oh, this guy!:
Well first it's a reverse thread, righty loosie. Yes, there's a tool specifically for this if a chisel won't work. That's a pretty soft nut, I bet you could split it with a sharp chisel and pry it off. That's the crank that it's on, if you're careful you should be able to avoid harming the tough metal. Anyway, search "GY6 starter clutch removal tool" and it will come up. Rich
