The fan and the temp gauge are on two completely different circuits. The gauge reading has nothing to do with sending electricity to the fan. The fan is supposed to cycle on and off, just because it comes on doesn't mean the engine's too hot. Let the bike run to the point that you think it's overheating and stick an oven type probe thermometer into the dipstick opening immediately after you shut the bike off. The water temp runs about 180, I'd say if your oil is over 200 you have a problem. I'm guessing on the oil temp but I'm sure it's pretty close. Rich

My Internet search found the following information.
The thermostat doesn't start to open until about 160 - 180 degrees and isn't fully open until somewhere around 200 - 210 degrees.
If you have a 50/50 antifreeze mix and your pressure cap is working correctly the antifreeze won't boil until somewhere around 260 degrees or so.
Motor oil is good up to about 250 - 260 degrees maximum. Yes, these are maximum antifreeze and oil temperatures and that is when you take steps to cool the motor down a little bit.

Yes, motor oil is good up to those temps but you do not want your water cooled engine running that hot. Rich

I'M HAVING SOME OF THE SAME PROBLEMS. WHEN I FIRST TURN ON THE KEY( W/OUT STARTING) THE TEMP GUAGE ALREADY MOVES TO ABOVE THE 3/4 MARK. SO WHEN IT RUNS A SHORT TIME IT SENDS THE GUAGE ABOVE THE HOT MARK. ANY THOUGHTS?

Bad gauge and/or bad sending unit. Since there is no guarantee the replacement parts would be any better. I mounted a digital gauge with the sensor epoxied to the radiator tank where the radiator inlet hose comes in after I put the sensor in a pan of boiling water to see how far off in what direction it was.
