I moved GTI's Topic because it was getting out of hand. Alleyoop

Alley moved it to a hidden board. I haven't been following that thread but read it after I saw this today. I gotta agree with Alley, it was dangerously close to spiraling out of control. I think all the sides were adequately able to express their views. If somebody strongly feels they need to add more I can edit the inflammatory rhetoric out of the thread and repost it so you can comment. If there's nothing else to say lets leave it be. Rich

I think that by hiding/deleting the thread, you do the forum and readers a dis service.
quite few of the posts were out of line.
at the same time, I still think the mechanism of failure is undecided.
we all learn by knowing how engines fail. when we see good info about failures perhaps mistakes, we can try to avoid having the same thing happen.
my guess based on GTI's few pics is that the bore and crank were malaligned, but that remains unclear.
the bore should index from the studs and not from case opening.
another point is: are these large cylinders with very thin base skirts prone to failure ?
I for 1 would like to see more pics of the failed engine.
was the crankcase opening bored eccentric ?
did the thin cylinder base skirt deform because the opening was eccentric ?

i think i was one of the last to post before it was removed and i would like to see what was the responce to my post i was very polite no name callling or anything like that the last i said about the subject was that i though the case was poorly machined and that it got to a person that did not know what to look for before building and that if that is what the company wants to stand behind i would not recomend them nor use them for anything that i will do

That is always something to look at when you buy a big bore kit especially 62,63mm always look for the ones with the thickest cylinder walls. From all the cylinder kits i have seen always the 62mm cylinder kits have the thickest walls (nothing near the OEM Kit) Also remember the 63mm cylinder kit cannot have really thick cylinder walls because then it would not fit. These cases can only be bored out to a certain point. Now they do make other cases that can be bored out to 67mm Which come from Taida but they are expensive usually running about $500.00 for the crankcases alone. My build i am doing i am running a 62mm because of the thicker cylinder walls compared to the 63mm.

OK, I agree, there's valid tech info to be gleaned out of that thread. I will try to pare it down to the tech aspect and repost. Rich

i think it should be reposted as was i did not see it getting out of hand to start with Your opinion is duly noted and respected. However, as admin I have to make content decisions for the forum and I feel Alley was correct in that this thread was turning personal and accusatory. I reposted the thread with editing aimed at retaining the tech aspect of the thread with relevant personal discourse. The edited thread is not locked and open for further comments. Try to keep it tech oriented please. Thanks, Rich

I know you were being respectful, I was also trying to edit for brevity and shorten the thread some. Rich
