I tore down a center section of a compeller rear diff ( early magnums are the same) and took pictures of it disassembled. This week, as time permits, I hope to reassemble it and take pictures as I do it and will post a tutorial. In the mean time here is what I got so far. I left the bearings in the main housings. Axel Drive Gear Assembly Reverse/Forward Shifting Fork Reverse/Forward Shifting Fork Disassembled The fork removed from the rod. This shows the check ball in place. The rod has a slot cut into it where this ball ( and spring below it) rides on the shaft. Reverse/Forward Gear Assembly Drive Gear Shift Rod Along with the Lever is what moves the fork from forward to reverse. Side Case Notice the shim to the left of the case. This shim keeps the bearing in the proper position Side Case Notice the shims to the right of the case. These shims keeps the bearings in the proper position. Jim/Owner Rapid Repair

Great lay out of the tear down Jim, and thanks! Looks to me like a real job to open and change out the shifter gear assembly as I will need to do. Just looking at this Diff. I can not see any damage to gears or shifter at all. Was there a problem with this unit or is this educational? If you can see the numbers on the shifter bearing or get the size I am going to have to replace mine as the chain sprocket has damaged the keys and the bearing is not going to slide off that.
This is really going to help me I can tell you know... Thanks

Very nice good job, break down like this helps a lot of the folks which have those differentials. Heck you can start making a manual and sell the manuals, and why not it takes a lot of time and effort to do this kind of teardown and explanations. Alleyoop

Iron getting new gear box and replacing the Reverse/Forward Gear Assembly on the old unit is a great idea. I am doing the same thing. On my replacement gear axle diff. the shaft on the r/f assembly were the rear chain sprocket goes the sprocket has damaged the spline, looks like was not harden properly. I have a new assembly just have to get into it
I am watching Jim's tread here like a Hawk....
