I just started the engine and ran it for the first time yesterday and noticed that the valve cover was getting really hot after about 5mins of idle, It didnt get any hotter after that time but when i did give it a little throttle it backfired or poped alot when i let off. Lean right? so i went into the top of the carb to move the clip down one but there isnt a clip in there just a needle and there is no markings on the needle suggesting there was ever a clip there, so how do i make the carb run rich other than a new jet? ??

Yes it is LEAN, but it hasn't got snit to do with the NEEDLE. It is one of four things: 1. The Idle is set to low 2. The Fuel Ratio Mixture is to Lean(need) to turn it Counter Clockwise to richen it up. 3. You do not have the vacuum hose connected to the ACV Valve on the Carb or that Vacuum hose has a rip or is leaking. 4. You have a Air Leak by the Header Pipe that connects to the motor. Alleyoop
