I have a 2012 TaoTao 49cc (CY50a) and I've been reading about exhaust restrictions. I know you need to treat exhaust, intake, and jetting as a group when modifying. But, I have a question specifically about the exhaust.
From the examples I've seen, the inside of the exhaust is shaped something like an hourglass, with that center, narrow part being the part that restricts air flow. Some advise sawing the exhaust in half, cutting that out of there, and then welding it back together (if you're not able to buy a new one).
Wouldn't it work if you just drilled a few holes into the exhaust in the area before the narrow part of the hourglass shape?

A free flow muffler does not give you a heck of a lot just louder which makes you think your going faster. You might gain 1 mph on the top end is about it and you won't even notice that. Unless you beef up your motor with more displacement for more power now the motor needs to breath more and get rid of the exahaust faster otherwise not worth it. Alleyoop

Yep, to gain a little not a heck of a lot mind you, a performance exhaust(free flow) helps a beefed up motor expel the exhaust quicker that is all it does, plus louder of course because now there are no baffles to direct most of the exhaust through the insulation to muffle the sound waves. Just like in house wall, take the insulation out and you can hear through the wall. Alleyoop
