Hi’Ya all,
I’ve been lurking here for a while now,
I finally have come to the end of my rope with this darned scooter (affectionately of course).
Little history about my scoot: she was very badly treated in a past life. I got her basically in a thousand pieces in a big cardboard box. I paid next to nothing for her because it was one of those super-hot deals off of CL ;-) pardon my cynical laugh. I am mechanically inclined and luv this stuff; glutton for punishment.
No docs, (fixed that with dmv)
No smog stuff. Cut off by po.
No fuel tank or lines or pump. Cut off by po
No air filter box. Cut off po.
Horrible paint (repainted it).
I got it running very good, with an okie style gravity fed fuel system under saddle. And Specter air filter. (no air leaks now).
Had cut off issues. Did valve job.
Runs very peppy now up to 5K on china tachometer 65 (real 55mph) on chinaometer. On stands revs up to rev limiter 9k or so. Under load on street will not go over 5K on tac.
At one time went up to 80mph (on china meter 70’s real speed). Changed plug and wire. Was grounding out and dying. Clip broken in boot, and cuts in cable.
Put electric fuel pump on (plenty of fuel) . Changed all hoses. (no vacuum or fuel leaks).
Seems like running lean (very clean plug every time) used AF screw no help. Adj. idle. Nada.
New belt in cvt ran with open housing. No bad sounds and belt travels all the way up. I Did not take apart variator or clutch.
Tried to adjust needle in diaphragm. No clips?? Just a needle and a plastic end piece. Tried making a little washer and raise the needle. Now it runs very badly. I will take that out soon.
Sorry about the long post. Next time much shorter.
End question: Runs perfectly fine up until 55mph real speed then nothing. (5K rpm). Just want 5 lousy mph more so I can pass trucks again on freeway. It ran about 70 real speed, so I know she can do it. I just don’t know why not now. Now it is a little iffy and must draft a lot….. ;-) Dave

Obviously the Linhai 260 Blues. Inside the carburetor there is a diaphragm that lifts the needle. Many times people have had trouble with a leak in the diaphragm that prevents it from fully lifting under load. Otherwise you have an air leak that is causing it to lean out and it won't pull the load.

You need to get a clip for the needle in the diaphragm, it won't run right until that's fixed.

I would check your rubber diaphgram for pinholes and or rips. One thing you can do is take the carb off and with your finger push up the Slider with a marker put a line where it stops then put 2 2 more marks 1/4" apart. Then run it and check the marks and see which marks have been hit.
That will help to determine if the Diaphgram not raising the needle out enough.

I would also check your Variator weights could be a guide broke or rollers are sticking sense it only does 5k rpms.

Kz1000St : I don’t think it is an air leak. While running I sprayed starting fluid all over the engine compartment (especially around air filter line and carb). No noticeable change. The diaphragm looked pliant and healthy to me but I will pull it again soon and look for pin holes etc. I did not look very closely at the time.
Richard: Don’t think this carb had a clip. There are no hash marks beveled into the needle. It is just a solid smooth face all the way up to the head. The needle sits in a little pedestal then a plastic three pronged cap that is held down by the spring. Thanks for the suggestions keep ‘em coming please.

I’m thinking this is probably the right track and I was going to do it. The variator looked fairly complicated to take apart at the time. I need to research how to dis- and re assemble before attempt.
It does run very well right up to 5k. I mean if I could just be happy with 55 it runs fine. But you know us tinkerers. We are never happy with what we have right? ;D

Two fast questions since I am new to the Chinese scoots.
I found out that when I seated the A/F screw fully (all the way closed) the silly thing still ran fairly strong.
In my past experience every time a small engine is closed off like that it quickly runs badly and dies. Is that the same on these scoots?

This darn thing runs like absolutely nothing I’ve ever worked on before. What I think should kill it; it runs as happy as a clam. What should not make a big difference (in my opinion) the thing dies)!

Last question for tonight; as I stated in the first posting, a lot of stuff was cut off and missing so I am flying by instinct and what I can hunt up off of sites like this one.

On the exhaust side of the motor there is a little rectangle metal box. (A pump of some sort). About the size of a little match box.
About a ¼” hose runs from the carb manifold down to it. It also has a larger metal elbow that comes out of one edge of it and it seems to run somewhere into the exhaust manifold by way of a rubber hose about 5/16”.

Coming out the face of this little box is a nipple for attaching a hose (again around 5/16 hose size). This little box makes a huge amount of noise (again like a pumping nose). I plugged it up with a bit of fuel hose and shoved a big bolt into the bit of hose to seal it off. Bike runs much better with it plugged and a lot more quiet.
What should be connected to this? And is there a way to disable all together or leave it as is.

If it runs after you closed the Fuel Ratio screw one of two things, Either the tiny Rubber-O-ring is missing in the Fuel Ratio Screw or it is sucking in air from someplace and is running lean.

As for the little metal valve on the EXHAUST pipe you have an EGR system and that is the valve.
There should be a hose that goes to the AIR BOX also a smaller nipple which a VACUUM LINE from the intake or a "T" or "Y" spliter. You can take all that crap off and make sure there is NO VACUUM LINE OPEN that feeds that VALVE that would cause a bad VACUUM LEAK. So get some JB WELD and PLUG UP any CONNECTORS ON THAT VALVE and check for an OPEN VACUUM LINE coming from the INTAKE MANIFOLD also check the AIR BOX or TUBE for an open connector that that EGR hose was connected to, PLUG THAT UP AS WELL.

Thank you for all the info, and places to begin.

The previous owner removed the “airbox” as well.

There is the original duct-work and what looks like a 45 degree elbow at end. Connected to this elbow is a regular old fashioned Specter round air filter cone. It is about 6 inches round.

I’ll plug up that egr valve this weekend. And close all the open lines I find. This weekend I’ll try to snap a few photos so you can see what I am looking at.

The vacuum line from the intake runs down to that valve. I presume that the nipple that should go to the air box is the one I plugged with a bolt and a little piece of hose. It probably is leaking around the bolt.
I'll plug it with Jb. I never thought about using that as a plug. Thankx

Hello guys (and gals)

Took the scoot apart again today, thanks to the video alleyoop provided was fairly simple to do. Inside rollers looked fairly new. very, very minor flat spots on some of the rollers. You can not see them you must feel with finger tip or hold up to light to see them.

Entire housing was full of sticky black graphite grease (like for packing axles and bearings). Little rollers were swimming in the gunk. No broken fins in the housing. the little dog ear clips were also swimming in the gunk as well. (note: all little clips stick into the top plate decently except for one, it is loose. if you hold it upside down the one clip slides off the plate). cleaned all the gunk off and used white grease as in the video. Put it all back together and it seems to slide up and down the splines and shaft easily now. does not get hung up now.

Took the carb diaphragm out again and removed little washer I installed. re inspected diaphragm (and found hole down by plastic washer at the bottom about the size of a small standard screwdriver tip. missed it last time opened (doing the job by shop-light at midnight).

I put a "band-aid" black rtv silicone over small hole and put back in carb after it set.

Going to order new diaphragm (any body know where)? went hunting powersport shops this weekend would like those slider weights and now this carb part. Nobody local here has them
everybody told me go online. Question do you know what size sliders I should order they have many choices?

FANTASTIC!! That rip in the diaghpgram will kill your top end speed. blue atv seems to work pretty good sealing the diaphgram rips or pinholes but you definitly just get a new one.

well your probably has a 30mm carb if it is the linhai motor.

Great!! I could not find just the Diaphragm I know they sell them for the 150cc scoots the 24mm carbs.

Hey Alleyoop, we hit a slight snag.
The part (we) bought came today in the mail. It is for the vertical engine. I have the horizontal motor. He told me he will take the stuff back minus restocking and shipping of course. (according to him) they do not make replacement parts for the linhai motor carb (supposed to be un-openable from factory) and (he) says I can only buy a complete carb at 185 bux.

Honestly I don't have another 200 plus to throw down at the moment. in the hope that this thing runs after that. I have already dumped quite a bit thus far and my spouse is bucking at the thought of a another few hundred.

Do you think he is just trying to up sell, or is what he states true?
can you peak into your "hat" and pull out a rabbit ? ;D
