CDI

I just bought a CDI online, and ordered a DC type, as that is what I have. Received one that is smaller and appears to be AC. They told me it is a DC part. Question is, what happens if I hook it up and try it? Do I fry anything if it is wrong?

The question is this, The TWO Plug that plugs into the CDI from your stator how many wires does it have? If your system is a DC system the CDI gets its voltage from the BATTERY. If your system is an AC system the CDI gets it voltage from the STATOR. So if you put a DC CDI in a AC system it will work, but if you put a AC CDI in a DC system it will not work. Alleyoop

CDI

I am confident mine is DC. It measures 3 1/2in x 1 1/2in vs 2 7/8in x 1 1/2in for the new one. Connectors on my existing are: 3 wires on the large plug, and one black wire on the small plug. with the key on, engine off the lone black wire read 12v. I did not realize that a dc cdi can be the same size as an ac cdi. As long as you say I won't fry any parts other than the cdi, I will see what happens. Won't be for a day or so. Thanks again.

Yep if that bottom wire is getting 12v with the key on then you have a DC system. The only thing that would happen is if the CDI is NOT not DC then it would fry the CDI. Alleyoop

Finished my CDI project (along with other parts) today. mounted that small CDI that I thought was an AC unit. Scooter fired right up. I guess one can't go by size. I also added a performance coil and iridium plug. I removed all emission crap, and left the air cleaner box alone till next month. After warmup, it had a terrible stumble at midrange, so I tore the Jap carb apart to change the rod position. NO adjustment on the rod. So I threw that carb on the bench and put on a cheap carb that I had laying around. I changed the rod position by 1 setting, and left the jet alone as I don't have any spares(yet). Unbelievable difference. My 150 runs like a scared rabbit. Very happy with todays results
