Hey all. I wanted to take time to introduce myself, names narib, and I just picked up a taotao 50 scooter a few weeks ago, due to needing transportation to a new job. I've been mining the forums for advice and tips on basic maint for my scooter (due to the fact that I don't know jack and id rather look like a moron and get the answer than try to work on it and look like a moron breaking it). I had a few questions that I need help clearing up. 1.) Iver the weekend I was finally able to get enough money to perform oil and gear oil change plus swapping out the spark plug. After doing so, I thought to throw in high grade gas, but noticed that the scooter appeares to have lost 5 mph off of acc and top speed. I threw in reg gas the other day and it seems to have come back but the acc is down a bit. Now when I did the oil changes, I filled up the gear oil till it basically was dripping out of the hole and the oil to where it was near the top of the thin part of the stick. Did I over fill either of those? The manual stated not to screw in the dip stick which is what I went by to check the oil lvl. 2.) When I swapped out the spark plug I noticed the stock one was black. I read that is a spark plug is blackened, it means the engine is running rich. What does that mean, and how do I fix that? 3.) The manual called for 15w40 for the engine oil which I used. Is this ok to make use of in the scooter? Or should I use another oil mixture? 4.) I peered around my scooter to see what I could do to derestrict it but so far I've yet to fiind the fabled "pink" wire and there does not appear to be a washer of any kind on the belt drive that I've read about. 5.) I live in ct so the landscape is fairly hilly, and the scooter bogs down to 15 20 mph going up hill, what can I do to increase the acc in it? I've seen performance upgrade packages but I really don't want to spend more than 300 350 in parts for upgrading it, and I just want to concertrate on its acc. The top speed is fine for now, but wouldn't mind a extra 5 10 mph tacked on if I can. 6.) Finally, I've noticed that it has been having a rough time starting up, takes three to five trys to get it to kick over, some times I need to resort to kick starting it. Would this be because of the spark plug or maybe because of the battery? Thank you all for your time and paitence in helping me and answering my questions. Safe riding, and may the wind be at your back.

also my scooter is at 450 km, and the manual states to clean the air filter, as this being my first time doing so, what should I do to properly clean it?

Hey all. I wanted to take time to introduce myself, names narib, and I just picked up a taotao 50 scooter. Congratulations on your scooter Narib and welcome to the forum.
I threw in reg gas the other day and it seems to have come back but the acc is down a bit. Give it time to clear out and try some Seafoam. Premium has less available energy than regular. Ignore the manual, it'll run better on regular.
The manual stated not to screw in the dip stick which is what I went by to check the oil lvl. Let the tranny oil dribble out till it stops then screw in the fill plug. Engine oil should be at the top of the marks with the stick NOT screwed in.
I read that is a spark plug is blackened, it means the engine is running rich. What does that mean, and how do I fix that? That usually means too much gas is in the mixture. Here is my good buddy Alley's carb tune. There's a wealth of information in the Library, you should peruse through it.
The manual called for 15w40 for the engine oil 10W 40 is fine in warm weather, 10W 30 in the winter. 15W might be hard to find and the weight difference is not significant.

I live in ct so the landscape is fairly hilly, and the scooter bogs down to 15 20 mph going up hill Sorry, but it's a 50cc, that's what they do. They also get 80 MPG.
Finally, I've noticed that it has been having a rough time starting up, Adjust your valves.
Whew!
