FANTASTIC directions! Very well said.
The only thing missing is: What if I can't tell if the idle gets any faster?
Does somebody sell a "temporary" tachometer to assist me in this step?

TINY TACH OR HEARIN AID, which by the way a lot of us old farts need many times(HAHA). But a tiny tach I believe is very important on a motor it tells you the past present and future just like a WIZARD would. With a tach you can see at a glanze if the motor is running right or not or a little down. Here is a good tach takes about 5 minutes to install the hardest part is deciding where you want it to see it. Alleyoop Scroll down to see it work: www.trailtech.net/tto_tach-hour.html

WHAT!! after you adjusted the white elephant?? Then something else is going on.
Seblake, when it dies does it just cut out or starts to just bog down and die?
After it dies will it start back up right away or do you have to wait say 5-10 minutes before it will start back up? Alleyoop

It's a DC battery. That's all I can tell ya. Petcock? I fighting rooster? I think I read that it is attached to the fuel filter? It's getting a bit dark here. Pictures will follow tomorrow - after I take the thing apart again. < Steve >

If your GAS TANK is above the CARB you have one of the following: Alleyoop THIS ONE ATTACHS DIRECTLY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE GAS TANK: THIS ONE IS ATTACH TO THE GAS TANK BY A HOSE: If the Gas tank is BELOW the CARB then it is a VACUUM OPERTAED FUEL PUMP. Alleyoop

Thank you for the info. I don't want to monopolize your time...
The tank is above the carb, I believe. I'll verify it when I get the plastic off.
To answer your questions from earlier: It starts to bog down before it dies. And I have to wait before it will start back up. The longer I wait, the further I can go before it stops again.
If there is a problem with the fuel "system", wouldn't it be consistent and not intermittent? As in it would stop the fuel altogether...?

You know it sounds more like it is running out of fuel in the CARB BOWL and it is not filling up fast enough.
Lets so a quick check of the PETCOCK and see how fuel is flowing out of it.
1. Get a container 2. Take the Fuel Hose off the carb and put it in the container 3. Crank the motor over and see if gas is dribbling out or streaming out. a. If it streams out lets check the carb and see if it is allowing fuel to come in and not partially blocked --4.
Connect the fuel hose back up and now take the CARB DRAIN HOSE and stick that in the container.
OPEN the CARB DRAIN SCREW counter clockwise( the fuel in there will drain out).
Again crank the motor over and gas should keep on coming out of the Drain hose. Get back on those tests but it sure sounds like it is running out of gas. Alleyoop

I disconnected the fuel hose from the carburetor. It came out with more pressure the first few seconds and then slowed down. Not streaming, but I didn't notice any dribbling per se.
Then I disconnected the fuel hose from the petcock. I connected a 15" clear hose to it so I could avoid gas all over and see the stream. The pressure was not as strong. But I could only do it once. The vacuum entered into play?
A couple of days ago, kepps1280(?) mentioned a fuel pump. My next step, kind sir!
