I'm having a hard time starting my trike. When I push the starter button the engine will sometimes turn over properly but most of the time its sounding like a kick back. And now along with the kick back I get a spinning noise like the starter is just free spinning. Does this sound like a starter problem, CDI problem, or the starting clutch again?

BUMMER!! If the STARTER is spinning and not turning the crank it is either the IDLER gears or the STARTER CLUTCH sorry to say.
Do you have a performance CDI or the OEM one? Alleyoop

Hey Justin , I don't know if this will help or not, but, mine would do just like that if I would let it sit for 4 days or more with the exact symptoms, unless it was on a battery tender all of the time. The battery that comes with these aren't the best and they drain quickly while setting. I bought a new battery and keep a tender on it and even though I haven't ridden it since the fall it starts up every time without the funny noises or that scary backlash like hiccup. I hope this might help you my friend.

Heck even a 50cc motor that does not have enough amps in the battery will make funny sounds when starting. I have been getting similar sounds on my 150 when cold. When it has been warmed up it will restart just like it was new. It is a 2008 with the original battery and I know it is getting to the end of its life span. 5 years on a battery is almost unheard of for a chinese scooter too. john

That is true if the battery is weak the starter will not have enough juice to turn the crank past the compression stroke and that is when you get a kickback. That is why I asked if he had a performance CDI which makes it even worse because they are fixed advanced even for starting. Alleyoop

Yep, when my Roadrunner was new it would do that in the first week I had it , but since I've kept a tender on it,it has never done that even once. It was hard to believe it was that easy of a fix.

Did a trickle charge on the battery and the trike ended up cranking up. Still kick backs when cranking though. I found a CDI cheaper than sunny and it was listed as a CDI for "Yamaha YP250 LH170MN Linhai VOG 250-300cc" I put it on and did not get any kick back. It sounded like a normal engine turning over when trying to crank. The only problem was I couldn't get the engine to fire. So I put back on the oem CDI. The kick back sound started back up but the engine fired. I just put in a order for a new CDI from Sunny. I'm going to try and crank the trike every day and let it run for a few minutes. I let it sit for 5 days before (when I had the issue cranking it) so the battery was drained a little.

Update: Got the CDI from Sunny and installed. The trike starts a little better and easier but still nothing like the Burgy. I guess Scooter Dept aka Sunny has changed its name once again. The Package said Motorsports Depot. Still same unprofessional packaging. They wrap a part in bubble wrap and throw it in a box. No receipt, bill of sale, nothing...........
