Hello all. I have been trying to get my scooter started for a couple of weeks. It used to run fine, but now it won't start at all. I changed the spark plug and tested it against the engine, and plugged the hole with my finger (it had a little compression but nothing that would make me say OH YEAH THAT"S GOT COMPRESSION~ and I emptied the old gas, sprayed quick-start in it and still no go. I watched a youtube video and the guy said to test the kick start by hand and it should have some resistance. Even for as weak as I am, it was no challenge to turn it and the "putt-putt" sounded very weak as well. What are the likely causes of this? Is there anything I can do? I just bought a compression tester but apparently there is no compression, so I guess I'll take it back. Is my engine junk? I have to say this is pretty disheartening. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't give up yet it could just be that the VALVES are tight and your loosing COMPRESSION.
So take the valve cover off and LINE up the CAM SPROCKET like this and then adjust both valves to .003 inchs and give that a shot. If you do not have feeler gauges go to the autoparts store and get a set. Make sure the feeler gauge set has .003 and .004 feelers in the set some sets start at .008 which is to wide of a gap for the scoot motors.

Thank you for getting back to me so fast. I did have a feeler set and followed the video, setting the valves to .004. It seems to have helped when I did the "finger test", but should I set them to .003? (I can still turn the kick by hand no problem). I sprayed starter fluid into the air filter again and that didn't work before my battery went dead so I'm charging it again. I started with a full charge today but sucked it dry through the course of working on the scooter today. This may or may not sound really stupid but as I have been working inside I haven't put any gas back into the scooter figuring that the starter fluid would give me something if it was going to work at all. I did notice oil in the air box, not a puddle or anything but a good coating for sure. I've seen a few people saying that they actually spray the starter fluid into the spark plug hole. Is that a good idea? Or is it just probably the spark plug wasn't hot enough? In the few attempts I made to kick start it didn't work either. Once again thank you for helping me. I don't know much- but at least I have tools and people helping me . Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

If its a 50cc you can set them to .003 if a 150 then .004.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE the AIR FITLER connected otherwise it will get to much air and not enough fuel.

Have you checked for SPARK? if you have a spare plug take the BOOT CAP off the one on the motor and stick the spare plug in the boot and hold it against the VALVE COVER and Give it a couple of cranks and see if it is FIRING a nice and blue spark.

If it is sparking then put the Boot back on the plug on the motor and TAKE the VACUUM hose connected to your petcock or any vacuum hose coming off the INTAKE MANIFOLD. Get a paper cup or a anything that will hold a TEASPOON of gas and pour it straihgt down the Vacuum hose into the INTAKE. Connect the Hose back up and try to start it. IT SHOULD FIRE at least once if nothing drastic is wrong with the motor and may even start and die.

This test will tell us if it is a FUEL DELIVERY problem into the intake.

The air filter is all hooked up. I did like you said and it does have a good spark. I also put some gas down the vaccuum line but it still wouldn't start. I had to guess on the amount and think i put in about a TABLESPOON instead of a teaspoon. What will happen if I used too much? the compression does sound a little better. I still have the valves at .004. I still need to crank them back to .003.

It doesn't take much gas, don't forget it is spraying fuel in when it sucks it in. So to much you will drown the poor thing(HAHA).

But Here is something else you can check, take the plug out and PUT YOUR FINGER in the hole and hold it nice and SNUGE and crank it. IF it has enough compression it will BLOW you finger off the hole. Now when I say blow your finger off the hole it will JUST LIFT it off the hole so don't be afraid(HAHA). IF YOU JUST feel a little pressure then you have COMPRESSION problems. Then what you can do is pour a TABLE SPOON OF OIL down the plug hole and AGAIN stick your finger in the hold nice and snuge and see if that produces more compression.

I feel a really good "pulse" but if I push hard it wont lift it. It feels pretty strong actually. I DO have that brand new compression tester, but I bought it from Harbor Freight so it may just be a pice of junk and not give me a good reading. Regardless, if I open it they'll charge me to restock it, which is only 20% ($4). How long will it take to "undrown" after I put too much gas down the intake? I want to put the oil in like you said to but should I wait for the gas to evaporate out of the spark plug hole first? I'll make a video of what I'm doing and also of all may vacuum lines if you want because I may have them hooked up wrong...(I doubt it though). Thank you Alleyoop.

If it is full of gas just give it a couple of cranks with the spark plug out and if gas is in there it will squirt it out. Feels pretty strong BUT did it lift the finger off the hole? Give it try again with a little bit of hole down in there what that will test is if the rings or the problem. The oil will seal and the compression should be stronger.

Yeah that definitely is better with the oil down in it. It does lift my finger off now. Soooo what now? will it start if I try the gas in the intake trick again? I do have to say that this is the first time I've smiled all day... and from what I can gather this means I have a bigger problem. But will it start? What should I do?

Well you can try ENGINE RESTORER and see if that helps seal and or heavier oil like 20-50 and see if that seals it enough for the motor to start.

I sprayed some starter fluid right into the spark plug hole and it still did nothing, I guess you don't think it has a bad vacuum seal then? Will the engine restorer be a problem later when I replace the top end?

No just drain the stuff with the restorer in and put in your regular 10wx40 oil after you rebuild it.

I really doubt I have these wrong but I thought I would put this up just in case. I am ordering my top-end rebuild parts tomorrow, but they didn't have any BBK's. Taotao USA quoted me $124 for everything that was on the list . Please let me know if you know where I can get the BBK kit or if there is anything wrong with how I have my vacuum lines connected. Thanks.

Looks good, the first canister you showed is just a dum GAS TANK VENT emissions you can take all that off and just take the hose coming from the top of the tank put a fuel filter on the end and tie it up a little higher than where it comes off the top of the tank. All that other canister stuff is doing is trapping fumes. The problem with those is if gas gets in there or gets clogged gas will NOT FLOW out of the tank. So you would plug up the vacuum line going to any of those canisters and eliminate a lot of hoses and possible problems.

2. Your fuel line coming from your PETCOCK whish is screwed into the bottom of the tank is TO LONG and has up and down. It is a GRAVITY fed system and the hose from the tank to the carb SHOULD BE GOING DOWNHILL no ups and downs. So shorten that fuel line a nice straight shot to the carb from the bottom of the tank.

Okay I have returned. I thought about starting a new thread for this but I figured you all just couldn't stand the excitement waiting for the next season of your favorite thread. I bought the kit and carburetor and made this unnecessary video for your enjoyment or ridicule I am going to get started on this right now and as you can see in the vid I am right next to my computer and can see if you see me.... creepy. Any comments or suggestions as I go are welcome.
