Hey all. I pulled out my 50cc taotao today to work on it. It was stolen and recovered 2 mths back and the punks had ripped out the igination. When I got it back I was able to kickstart it. Now I'm unable to kickstart it over no matter how much muscle I put into the kickstart. The only diff is that I had to pull the battery out to put into my new one(which just got stolen). Would not having a battery in it prevent it from kickstarting?

If the CDI is AC you do not need a battery for the motor to start. But If the CDI is a DC CDI then YES you need a battery for it to start. Alleyoop

Here is a picture of very common CDI found on scoots: See the POWER WIRE BLACK AND RED on the RIGHT BOTTOM. Take you 12V LIGHT TESTER or Volt meter and of course first ground the black wire coming from your tester and then touch that connector and if IT LIGHTS UP it is DC CDI or if using the VOLT METER it will read out 12v. ok awsome. Now if I test it and it doesn't need a battery, what should I look at?

Well First make sure GAS is getting to the carb. 1. Take the Fuel hose off the carb put it in a container and turn the motor over and see if fuel comes out into the container. 2. If it does then take the VACUUM HOSE off the PETCOCK and get a cup or something and put about a TEASPOON of gas and pour it Straight into the INTAKE MANIFOLD through the Vacuum line. Hook the hose back up and IT SHOULD FIRE IF it is getting SPARK.
3. If it does not FIRE at least once then take the PLUG out and TEST it for SPARK HOLD it against the motor and crank it and see if you see the SPARK PLUG FIRING. Get back on the result of those tests Alleyoop
