Hey everyone! New to the forums! Just a little background before I get into asking for help. I own a Honda Elite 80, and just recently purchased a TaoTao 50cc, which is the one I'll be asking a question about. I love anything with two wheels mostly, haha. Hope to get to know some like minded people! On with my question. The TaoTao that I just picked up has some issues. I'm waiting on a new kickstart lever to arrive because the other is stipped out. We started it before I bought it, because he had another scooter and we just borrowed it's lever. But the electric starter hasn't worked in a long time he said. So, while waiting on my lever I've been messing around with it. I put a screwdriver over the solenoid and the starter turned. I took off the solenoid and put on one that I know for a fact works. But when I hit the starter nothing happens. When looking down into the engine area I noticed that there is a wire unhooked. It's dangling a little ways in front of the motor and behind the battery. Could that be causing the problem? Sorry, I know that that's a really vague way to describe which wire it is. ***I was looking back through posts and found the same wires in question. Apparently they are nothing.*** Could the switch just be bad? Anyway to test that? I appreciate any help you guys can offer. And sorry for the long winded post

When you squeeze the Brake handle to start it Do your Stoplights come on? The Brake Switchs are the ones that send Voltage to the Solenoid. Have you tried squeezing the other brake and see if it activates the Solenoid when you push the start button. The start button all that does is grounds the SOLENOID to complete the circuit. Its the brakes that send the juice. Now you can test out if the Solenoid is getting voltage when you squeeze the brakes. Get a 12v Lighter Tester or volt meter and PROBE the YELLOW and GREEN striped wire going to the SOLENOID right by the Solenoid and turn the key on and squeeze the brake if one doesn't send the juice try the other brake. I'm very poorly equipped on tools at the moment. Ill pick up a meter tonight, test it and let you know what I find out. Thanks!

I noticed that there is a wire unhooked. It's dangling a little ways in front of the motor and behind the battery.
On mine there are two wires in that neighborhood. One is the ground wire from the engine to the frame on the right side, the other comes from the front cowling to the frame on the left. I always assumed it was from the regulator or the controls (brake switch, horn, lights, etc.). One on the left is green, the right is black.

Ok, so I got a meter and hooked it up to those points. Nothing. Held the brake, nothing. Held brake and pressed starter switch, nothing. The meter never once moved. Where would I go from here? To me it seems like the switch is bad. The brake lights up whenever i pull either lever, like it's supposed to.

I would first check the yellow and green wire and follow it back. The brake switch wire that sends the voltage to the STOPLIGHTS and the SOLENID SPLITS so we know squeezing the brakes is sending juice because your stoplights work but nothing to the solenoid. So it has to be where the wire from the brakes split and the one going to the solenoid is disconnected or broke along the line. IF you tested the YELLOW and Green wire in the picture of the Solenoid I put up. Maybe it is just disconnected. Alleyoop

Ok good, so tape the brake on and test the yellow and green wire going to the solenoid and see it it is getting juice from where it plugs into. If no juice is there then it is further up the harness. You did say your brake lights come on when you squeeze the brakes. If so then something is broke or disconnected further up those wires. Alleyoop

I went ahead and checked that point with my meter, nothing. Where up the harness is the next point to check? I really appreciate your help here!

My headlight doesn't come on by the way. Not sure if that might be related?

Ok, sorry to keep adding to this but I took the front panel under the headlight off and everything looked good until i got near the bottom. There were several wires that someone has soldered together. Correct me if i'm wrong but I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the factory that way. Here is a pic, you can see the wires in question to the right just beside that light. The forum keeps turning the pictures to odd angles. Attachments:
