How much free play typically should there be in the throttle? It seems as if I have excessive free play, but really not sure.

Gatekeeper is correct you need some play so it springs back shut otherwise I go with 1/4 play to make sure it has enough spring back to close the butterfly good when you want to get the RPMS to drop quickly. Alleyoop
