So far every scoot Ive ridden has crappy brakes. More like a slow down vs a braking effect. Why? We have a rotor, drum, a fraction of the weight of a 4 wheel vehicle but nothing close to the stopping power. ABS is a joke! It would be a miracle to lock one of these brake systems up!

No problems with mine either. Could lock up both wheels so what more do we need on a 55/60 mph machine? Take the abs off if you want to stop quicker than running out of gas. The abs is a joke, just a way to keep the front wheel from locking up.

My back brakes aren't great, but my fronts would throw me over the handlebars if I apply em too hard

All three of my Chinese bikes stop well, even the drum brakes on the 50cc bike. I'm especially impressed with the tiny disc on the front of the fashion. It's not much bigger than the disc on the 150 scooter yet I scarcely use rear brake at all on it.

Well what can be done to improve the existing ones?

If your does not lock up the front wheel easily fix it, some thing is bad wrong. It is an easy matter to remove the so called "abs" if you still have it. All it is is a pressure bypass that prevents using the front brake the way you should be able to do it. True abs would cost more than the scooter did so you can be assured you do not have it. True abs pulses the brakes which yours can't do. It is up to you to pulse or lock up the brake not a restriction or a bypass in the brake line.

Im seriously thinkin.. U dont need the front brake to lock up.. nor the rear .. but agree ya have to puttem on the edge sometimes.. ABS is bullcrap on ANY vehicle..I am a car mechanic and a drifter, and I do bikes.. Good brakes and quality pads are key as well as no AIR in the hydraulics. The Chinese Bikes are junk.. Go ahead and admit it..

The brakes were one of the first things that really impressed me when I started riding my Lance/Znen. It's got discs front and rear and it will whoa down in a hurry. I have to brace my feet or slide right off the seat.
Basic brake science to make them better. Fresh fluid. Different pad recipes will grab and wear differently. In the extreme, braided steel brake hoses will eliminate most of the rubber balloon effect and make the brakes feel more responsive.

Yes, bleed the brakes if they don't feel right. You're actually the first person I've heard complain about this. It could be an ABS valve or a master cylinder defect, but bleed the lines first.
