Hi, I'm a poor college student who can't afford a car so I bought a 2012 150cc Jonway (Chinese brand) scooter off the internet. I've had nothing but problems with it. I don't know very much at all about mechanical things, but I'm so poor I can't afford to pay someone to fix it every time it has new issues (which is frequently). I have been trying to figure all of this out as I go along. It started out randomly bogging down during acceleration at high speeds (45+ mph), then gradually started bogging down at lower and lower speeds and more frequently until I couldn't even get up to 20 mph before it would bog down and shut off. It was going through a lot of oil. It wasn't leaking on the pavement, but I was always having to add a quart of oil every 2 weeks (even after switching from 10w-40 to 15w-40). I didn't see any noticeable smoke from the exhaust pipe. I drained the gas tank and put new gas in it. I changed the fuel filter. I cleaned the carb twice. I replaced the spark plug twice due to carbon build up. I was doing all my regular motor oil changes (by mileage) and changing the gear oil at the same time just to keep things simple. All of this only got me 1100 miles on the scooter (over 1 year). Most of the time I couldn't even drive it due to it not working. When it was drivable I would ride about twice a week. In August, I got a tax return so I was able to bring it to a good motorcycle mechanic. He did a compression test, replaced the whole top end (pistons, rings, gasket, valves), set the valves, and cleaned and adjusted the carb. This cost me $500 but got it running like a top! That was 3 months ago. Now I am at 2050 miles and it is starting to bog down again at 40+mph. I am devastated! I have been babying this scooter like crazy! I have been doing oil changes once a month (changing gear oil too). I add a fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank after EVERY fill up. I let it warm up a good 5 minutes, or more, after starting the engine before accelerating. Every time I accelerate I take my time and accelerate VERY slowly (even though people honk at me or flash their lights at me because they want me to go faster). I make sure not to push the engine, especially uphill. I rarely drive past 40 mph. If I do it's because I'm going downhill. Plus, it has started to leak oil onto the pavement. It looks like it is leaking from a seal located in a vented box behind the valve housing unit and spattering all over the underside of the scooter, making it drip from multiple points. I am at my wit's end! I can't afford to pay $500 every 3 months to keep it running. Am I doing something wrong? What is causing this trouble and how can I fix it? Also, once I fix it, how can i keep it from happening again? Thanks for any and all advice!

If you can follow some simple instructions, you can probably fix it yourselve. The bogging is most likely the Carb needs to be adjusted(the Fuel to Air Mixture). It is pretty easy to do and all you need is a small screwdriver to get at the Fuel Ratio Mixture screw. Here is what your carb most likely looks like: Notice where the Fuel Ratio Screw is. After you start it and let it warm up 5 minutes or so then you can adjust it. Go read this and look at the pictures and follow the instructions take your time. First see if the bolts holding the Valve cover are loose if so give them a little tightening NOT TO TIGHT do not force tighten them just nice and tight and see if that stops the leak. If not you will need a new gasket: Take the bolts holding the valve cover off and you will see the rubber gasket in a slot around the Valve cover and put it in. Now remember when you put it back on Nice and Tight but not crank on the bolts just nice and tight. I think I see the problem here people.
All of this only got me 1100 miles on the scooter
Now I am at 2050 miles and it is starting to bog down again at 40+mph.
Valve adjustment. Notice that his crisis is smacking him at 1000 miles on a new head. The valves stretch, especially the exhaust, causing you to lose compression and power. Pop off the valve cover, instructions on setting the piston at Top Dead Center are in the tech section, and set the exhaust valve at .005 inch and the intake at .004 inch and that puppy will be singing again.

I would have suggested adjusting the valves BUT, if it where the valves after getting hot it would not want to hold low rpms and idle and want to die at stops. That was never mentioned so that is why I do not suggest adjusting the valves. If the OP comes back with yes that is what is also happening then YES by all means adjust the valves. Alleyoop

Since you've been babying it so much this likely doesn't apply, but when you run the engine hard, you lose oil thru many different locations. You can add an oil vent catch and a pvc valve to the bike. That will save you a lot of oil. Scroll down to the pcv and oil crankcase catch. www.scrappydogscooters.com/125_150cc_Performance.html

You do not need to spend money on an OIL catch can which just makes the seller richer. All you need IF the oil is being blown out of the Valve Covers PCV VALVE HOSE is take the hose put a FUEL FILTER on the end of it and zip tie it higher than the valve cover. IF and WHEN it spits out oil when you stop the motor the oil will drain back down. Alleyoop

That's good to know. But what about creating a vacuum in the crankcase? Car's have them, why wouldn't you use one for a bike?

They already have them on the VALVE cover that is what that Connector is on the valve cover: Those catch oil catch cans you are just wasting your money. Like I said he is laughing all the way to the bank. Alleyoop

Thanks Guys! Sorry for my delayed response. I've had several papers due at the same time and hadn't gotten a chance to respond until now. I looked for the carb adjusment screw but couldnt find it. I tried taking pics of it to show you but they all came out blurry. I did find the throttle adjusting screw. However, I don't think that part needs to be adjusted. When I start the engine it jumps to 3,100 -3,500 rpm and once it warms up it gets down to 2000 rpm. I checked the valves and they are both at .003 inches. It sounds tight but I think I remember something about .08 mm and .10 mm, which would be about right i think. Should I adjust them to .004 and .005 inches or leave them as they are? I am with Alley on this one, I WOULD NORMALLY SAY ADJUST THE VALVES, BUT, yours are set correctly, IF THEY ARE .003. THIS IS THE SCREW YOU NEED TO LOCATE, LABELED AIR/FUEL RATIO ADJUSTMENT.

The way that I usually tune my carb. Is TIGHTEN(CLOCKWISE) ALL THE WAY IN, THEN, TURN COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (ONE ROTATION AT A TIME!, it takes the engine a few seconds to adjust) until the IDLE REACHES ITS HIGHEST POINT. If the IDLE is above 2000RPMs when your DONE TUNING, THE SCREW ON THE THROTTLE SIDE: TURN IT COUNTER CLOCKWISE, TO BRING THE IDLE BACK DOWN TO AROUND 2K, they like it about right there.

PS THIS IS NOT YOUR EXACT CARBURETOR. BUT the screws should be in almost the same spot. Dont pay anttention to the vacuum lines
