Newb here but not new to scooters or mechanics. I recently purchased a gy6 150 equipped scooter for next to nothing, a little tinkering, a belt, and I got it running great but it's leaking oil. I replaced the valve cover gasket, and starter o ring which took care of the majority of the leak, but noticed that the head gasket is leaking a bit as well. My question is, is it possible to replace just the head gasket since the base gasket is torqued by the same bolts or should I just go ahead and do a top end rebuild on it? It runs great just leaks a bit of oil. It has 2700 miles on it as well. This is my first gy6 equipped scooter, I usually only buy 2 strokes.

My opinion is that if the head gasket is leaking, Your rings are by-passing the oil.. And yea, Id redo the top end. I put a 58.7MM oversized jug kit on mine. It came with 58.7mm piston, rings, cylinder, and gaskets. Its a direct bolt on kit and you can use ur existing valve train. AND KICKS arse on power! Just U tube tips on the chain tensioner and timing marks.. any questions ask.. Oh about 80 bux for the kit Im talking about..Gimmie a while and I'll give the Info on where I got mine.

Thanks for the info, I tried convincing my wife she should let me swap the 150 onto her Honda Metropolitan. She didn't seem to like the idea but an extra hot rod scooter could be fun, especially for only $80, I paid $50 for the scooter and have under $20 in getting it going so far. So an extra $80 is no big deal. It doesn't have a title but is clean.

You're supposed to do both gaskets and not use gasket dressing because it affects the length of the assembly. Having said that, I have replaced just the top gasket and it worked. I rode a BMW 800cc in the '80's and took it back to the dealer because of oil around the base gaskets. I said and he said "that's not leaking, it's seeping." Hmmmmm. I did ride it like that and it ran beautifully. It also seeped the whole time I had it. I'm the same way with GY6's, I ignore seepage but deal with the leaks. If you do just the top gasket you might get some seepage around the base gasket. If the bike runs good, doesn't use gallons of oil, and has good compression, I leave 'em be. Not everyone will be comfortable with that philosophy.

I'm on my fifth head gasket on my 150cc (don't ask) and the base gasket is original. There are so many things you can screw up getting to the base gasket and back, I left it alone. My leak was a crack in the head at the cam tunnel. New head, new gasket and just fine. I took off the fan shroud and then put enough back to make it run, BRIEFLY, to locate the leak. You might just need to re-torque the head to solve the problem.

Try re-torquing the head bolts.
