I have a type 2 and the filter is a paper element than cannot be cleaned and reused. Both are for 50cc and Im wondering what the difference is. Can I use a regular airbox and filter ?

Yeah, sure you can, why not? As long as the bolt pattern matches your scooter's you're good. The filter elements provide the same vacuum so that's not a factor. Have you considered a UNI? Now would be a great time to switch. They are washable and would last the life of the scootrer. Here is the same vendor's UNI page. Check out the prices compared to the box filters. Just make sure it will fit under the engine mount.
