Got some feelers out on the wheel swap,,,there's not enough difference from my et to the new one to justify spending the $2000 for the difference,,,,found and engine/trans 20 miles from the house cheap with 1000 miles on it,,,,may pick that up for a spare,,,,,,,the et would look great with those wheels on it i hope it works,,,that would be great!!!

I realize I'm a cheap, lowlife Barbarian but the thing that always frosts me is the prices they ask for the things. They sell 200,000 of them they said, probably mostly in Europe I presume. Those guys must either be made of money or import regs kill the competition. A freakin Piaggio Typhoon 50 ( www.piaggiousa.com/scooter/typhoon-50.html )is $1999 and has a Vespa engine. OK the engine might be built in Thailand or Vietnam, but even still it's a Vespa. So you're paying almost twice as much for a pressed steel frame. Nutty. Don't get me started on 150cc scooters at 300 Ninja prices. Even this is a major bargain over $3700. www.piaggiousa.com/scooter/fly-50-4v.html

Wait, maybe we need the viewpoint of a European. Pardon me Mr. SJrainsford, what is the opinion of Vespa vs. other brands on your side of the ocean?

KZ it's the name,,,just like harley,,they sell because of the badge,,,Hey even i was all hot to trot to buy the ssr sonic,,,when that fell thru ,,and the et came up for a REALISTIC price i grabbed it because they have a good reputation,,,this is the only reason i got it trust me,,,there is no way no how i'm ploppin down 5 large on a scooter,,,and that's not the high end one either,,,lot's of people feel the same way,,,the (2) 949's they have at the vespa shop are still there,,,and they will remain there,,,they're simply not worth what they're asking for them,,,,,i know two chicks that ride piagio,,,very happy,,,had them side by side with my et,,,same exact engine/trans,,,just the body was different,,,,and at $9+ a gallon in europe they have swarms of the things buzzing around,,,plus parking,,a total nightmare,,,paris london rome,,,all the biggies,,hellish parking,,,,

My point is this. In this Country it's the badge that sells. Harleys aren't "the Mercedes of Motorcycles" yet if you ask a HOG owner he'll say they are. You and I know better. In Europe they have a different mind set. They sell Smart cars by the boatloads based on fuel efficiency and reliability. Transportation devices are neither toys or status symbols, as much, like here. Rainsford introduced us to www.lexmoto.co.uk in Britain. This model www.lexmoto.co.uk/SB50QT-16(B08).php costs $1400 American This one www.lexmoto.co.uk/ZN50QT-K.php about $1600. I'm sure over there these must undercut Vespa, have dealer backing and must work right. Yet Vespa is still selling like hotcakes. Yes, I'm sure Piaggios must sell as well or better based on price. But heck, Vespa sells 200,000 world wide. Harley sells 260,000 worldwide and half sell here. Plus in Britain you don't need a bike license under 125cc so a scooter is a big deal. I'd just like a Brit's point of view. Also read the customer reviews.

yes it's the badge that sells, because they have proven their quality throughout the years...
it's really difficult to compare Harleys,Beamers,mercedes etc to only these ------> 2008 Eagle Milano 150- 7750 miles 2009 Honda Rebel 250- 9500 miles (Hers) 2009 CF Moto Fashion- 7793 miles 2009 MC-114 50cc Cub Clone- 3169 miles
just so incomparable!!!

They are comparable to a $2400 Yamaha Morphous that the previous owner couldn't get rid of fast enough. And yet. Somehow I've read and seen numerous Harleys break down. If you were a motorcyclist you would know that. Since you aren't your opinion doesn't count. Second. There are only 30,000 scooters sold in this country annually. I guarantee, guarantee, less than 5,000 of those are Vespas. Much less. Harleys have never proven their quality-ever. Go to Modern Vespa and read. They break down too. Two limericks from the 1930s You'll never wear out an Indian Scout Or its brother the Indian Chief. They're built like rocks To take hard knocks. It's the Harleys that cause all the grief. Harley Davidson made of tin. Ride one out and push it in. Current stab: 85% of all Harleys built since 1980 are still on the road. The other 15% managed to make it back to the shop. My question wasn't for you. What you don't know is fairly evident. Riding being one. I was asking the question to the person where Vespa sells most. SJ Rainsford in Britain.

I think an interesting thing to keep in mind when talking about the Euro mindset regarding scooters; a few years ago the city or Barcelona Spain registered more scooters than the entire USA did in that same year. I'll have to dig up that report. Probably 3 or 4 years ago now. Just some food for thought.
