So I have no idea what is happening to my dad's bike. He put it back together but we think that at some point he mixed up some wires...or something. So now the running lights do not come on, the headlights are ALWAYS on, the headlight/running light switch does nothing (but the bright/dim headlight switch works), and the brake light does not light up bright when you press the brakes, but before we took it apart, ALL of this functioned. Where should I check first?

Where's Scotty? I'm sorry but I don't remember what your bike is Kirk. Can you beam me the model and a wiring diagram if you have it? I suspect your dilithium cryustals are shorted. Rich

Scotty (His name is actually Scott, by the way) is not dealing with his own wiring issues His bike is a "Sunny" scooter. I'm not sure of the model, however, it is a 2012.

Did you take your phaser apart? It sounds to me like you screwed up the right handlebar cluster. Sunny scooter and 2012 tell us nothing. Is there a wiring diagram in the back of your manual? If so scan it and beam it onto the site. Or, you can start pulling plastic and take pictures. I can't help you with vague information like that. Scotty, Enterprise engineer.

We never pulled the front end. Only the seat plastics, and back, such as the brake light wiring. Nothing in the handlebar cluster or front of the bike has been changed. I'll look for a wiring diagram.

Do you have a headlight switch? Some of them don't and that would matter.

Do you know if it's AC or DC system?

Does it still start with the electric start? I'm reviewing the Enterprise's diagrams. Easy Uhura! That hurt! Spock out.

OK, you've got a brown and green going into the tail light...see if you mixed them up. Also check brown to green/yellow.

I do believe it has a headlight switch, yes. If by headlight switch you mean the switch that has three places it can be in (Headlight and running lights on, running lights, and off), then it does have a headlight. The running lights appear to run off DC (they uses to turn on with the key), but the headlights are AC. It still starts with the electric start.

Are you sure the headlights are AC and not DC? Yes since you tore the back, the BROWN WIRE is for your running lights the GREEN IS ALWAYS GROUND. The YELLOW AND GREEN are your BRAKE LIGHTS.
Now off the brake switch the wires run down to near the battery or Solenoid it has a plug on the end of it and then a plug from the SOLENOID plugs into it and it SPLITS then a YELLOW and GREEN go to your brake lights. That is why when you squeeze the brake to start the brake lights come on and at the same time it sends voltge to the SOLENOID and the start button all that does is GROUNDS the SOLENOID and completes the circuit and sends 12v to the starter.
So from what you are saying you the wires going to your tail lights wired wrong.

This is a generic wiring diagram for a W/Y/G pigtail system. The yellow wire is AC and supplies the headlight. The DC side comes on with the key and turns on the tail light and some other DOT mandated lights.

Now why is the headlight coming on "all the time" which means with the ignition switch I'm assuming. Because the black or brown wires, which come on with the ignition, have been hooked onto the AC system which only comes on after the bike starts. You guys took the bike apart, you guys know where you were rooting around, I don't. Pull the same panels off and look around. You'll probably see a mismatch of wire colors. If you see the brown wire follow it, it lights up with the key, not the stator. Sometimes the wire will be black, see if there's a mismatch. The brown should run to the tail light and the green/yellow to the brake, check that out. My generic diagram is not set in stone...things vary widely. It is more of a conceptual diagram. But my impression at this point is the ignition switch wire got hooked onto the AC circuit. Rich

Ahaha, haven't given up quite yet. We have three Chinese Scooters in the garage, none of them were running when we got them and now they are (two of them thanks go you guys). We also HAD a Honda Spree that didn't work, but we fixed that also and then flipped it. Now we have a 1973 Vespa Piaggio Ciao with a blown head gasket that we are repairing (and keeping). Also we are repairing our friends Yamaha Razz (obviously, that's what the topic is about!), and also his other scooter we can't identify.

So I guess you're right, maybe we SHOULD open up a repair emporium :3

Also I'm going to actually take a look at the wiring again today. I've just been busy for the past couple days.

unplug the regulator , if the head lights go out its the regulator .

Very confused (born that way) Sunny 2012, 50, 150, 1000cc? Does make a difference. Generally the 50cc scooters are a little more simple although I've seen them wired exactly like a 150. Sunny Scooters like a lot of Chinese scooters have no diagrams or manuals.

Rich's diagram is one of the best generic diagrams around but if it does have a on/off headlight switch plus a dimmer then here's a diagram that's hard to beat.

So if you didn't bother anything in the front then it's simple you've in your work have crossed the black with the yellow in the harness as I'm assuming that the headlights come on when you turn the key on? Even though brown does go to the tail lights if you do have the switch in this diagram it is not crossed because with switch one can turn just the tail lights on and not the headlight and since you said no difference in the lights no matter what you do with the switch, black and yellow are crossed.

Now how did you cross them. In these harnesses they sometimes bundle connected wires together and just moving them can cause this. Not the R/R as it does not have black and if the R/R fused it would be yellow to red and the lights would be on all the time even with the key off.
