True. Although I'm horrible at splicing wires...is there a special technique to putting wires on?

best way is to first slip a heat shrink tubing over one of the wires then twist them together long ways then solder them then slide the heat shrink tubing over the splice and heat up the heat shrink for a nice protected seal.
