I think if you are going to ride these scooters, you might as well get the hang of all the basic stuff mentioned here. You might not be able to bother your local mechanical person, and things are going to crop up that need attention. You probably should be able to: change a plug, change a belt, tune the carb, adjust the valves, clean the carb, check for spark, check for fuel flow, understand your vacuum hoses, understand your fuel hoses, change the motor oil, change transmission oil, change air filter, put air in the tires.
you should probably also know about about the coil, cdi, regulator (where they are so that if someone recommends changing them, you know what they are talking about. They are all plug and play with a set of wrenches/screwdrivers, and ANYONE can do it).
