So I recently purchased a scooter from a friend from school. She sold me her slightly used 2008 SSR 150 cc scooter great condition. It has about 345 miles on it roughly and i've had the scooter for well over 6 months now. Today for the first time the scooter while in route home (going about 40) just gave out. It died in the middle of the road and I have no idea what caused it. Now it wont start up again. It has a full tank of gas and the battery is not the issue, it turns over or chokes, and then tries hard to start but cant or wont for more then a few seconds. I'ver had my scooter stored in a garage for the past 4 months due to cold weather here is boise over winter, and recently took it out.
If there is anyone that knows what might be going on please let me know if this issue is a quick fix or something I need to take it in to have looked at!
Or if anyone has something like this happen to them i'd like some advice on what your actions were on fixing the problem.
Thanks so much for any input -Lindsay

sitting in the garage for 4 months with gas in the carb and not starting it at least 1 a week or 1 every 2 weeks will cause the fuel to turn to varnish and the fuel outlets get clogged. So you need to take the carb off and clean it out. Alleyoop Usually what gets clogged up if fuel is left to long without running is the PILOT JET and its passage and the TINY HOLES by the BUTTERFLY. The Main Jet is pretty big so that is usually not the problem. It is very easy to clean out the carb just take the carb off and take the carbs float bowl off usually about 4 strews. Get a Spray Can of Carb Cleaner they come with a long thin straw to get into small holes and it creates good pressure. 1. Unscrew the Pilot Jet and Main Jet and clean them make sure you can see DAYLIGHT through them. 2. Then Stick the Thin Straw into the holes the JETS came out of and SPRAY. THIS IS USUALLY THE PROBLEM THE PILOT JET AND THE TINY PILOT JET FUEL OUTLETS BY THE BUTTERFLY.

Follow Dr. Oop's advice. Also, hold your sparkplug against the valve cover and crank the bike, you should see a bright blue arc. Also set your valve gap.

Also, buy scooter insurance that has towing service. I pay $85 per year for Progressive insurance which includes theft and towing. Already got my scooter towed when the battery bit the dust. And watch this video to increase your odds of survival.....

Broken plug comes to mind. Also, check all your fuses and electrical connections.

No one has asked if Lindsay knows someone with mechanical ability and tools. Any advice given here will useless if not. So, do you have a friend or family member who tinkers with motorcycles, cars, etc, and has more than a screw driver and a pair of vicegrips to work with?
I don't mean any disrespect to you Lindsay.....but I have 2 daughters of my own, and 2 grand daughters (the oldest just got her learners permit)....so I kinda know what most young girls specialties are. Fixing broken vehicles, getting dirty greasy hands and nails, and scrapped knuckles, don't rank too high on a Favorites List, of the average school aged (or close to) young female.

First off I'd check the oil ,,, sounds like a soft seize to me, running fine and then shut off while at speed then hard start and the battery is not the issue,,, or you lost ignition some how,, coil could have gone bad,, when you try and restart it does it turn over or does it labor to start?

I think if you are going to ride these scooters, you might as well get the hang of all the basic stuff mentioned here. You might not be able to bother your local mechanical person, and things are going to crop up that need attention. You probably should be able to: change a plug, change a belt, tune the carb, adjust the valves, clean the carb, check for spark, check for fuel flow, understand your vacuum hoses, understand your fuel hoses, change the motor oil, change transmission oil, change air filter, put air in the tires.
you should probably also know about about the coil, cdi, regulator (where they are so that if someone recommends changing them, you know what they are talking about. They are all plug and play with a set of wrenches/screwdrivers, and ANYONE can do it).
