ok I'm back into this thing. The cut outs continued, returned whatever, I have now fitted a new Malossi big bore cylinder kit and a new stator. The stator I think has been the problem all along. It appears to heat up then cut out. I have had 40 minute rides and it goes ok. It is doing over 86 KPH up from the 58 kph it was doing standard.

I would never pronounce this thing as cured. It always finds a way to crap itself. No confidence whatsoever in taking it a long way from home. Lemon of the century. Faulty electrics, gauges, three seizures, two oil pump failures, two starter motor failures, batteries, short circuits, rotted brake cylinder glass, three carburettors, three coils, three CDI's five plugs .. easy 300 hours into the build and $3,000 spent.

Hi thanks for that, I just got back to it. I replaced my fancy aftermarket coil with the standard factory one and so far so good. I gave it a thirty minute test ride in the back yard today then a further 10 minute one later in the day and it hasn't cut out yet. I still am not confident enough to take it past the letterbox so will do further back yard testing. Thanks again ...

ok starter is fixed by fitting another earth wire. Now the problem is this. I can ride around for a few minutes and then it cuts out. Electrically cuts out. No spark. It starts again straight away. Something is shorting out the coil wire or something is shorting to the frame as I saw a spark jump a gap in the frame. Is there a way of testing the ignition coil or how can I check its earth?

ok I fitted the new cylinder kit fitted the carby and I didn't even connect the fuel line up and it started straight away. The next day it wouldn't turn the starter motor over. It clicks at the relay and I can feel a pulse in the wire to the starter motor. I have the battery fully charged all the time. The fuse is ok. I tried a different relay and starter motor but the same thing happens .... just a click off the relay. I don't think I am getting a spark either, I have to check that again. I connected up a different coil .. same caper ... any ideas?

Here is my experience with Scrappydogs Scooter parts.
They sent me the wrong part then wouldn't talk to me. "I was sent a cylinder kit with the wrong gudgeon pin. Try as I may (several times) to get the situation rectified they simply chose to ignore me in the end hoping I'd go away. Due to poor packaging, the head gasket I ordered was damaged and they weren't interested in that either. There are plenty of other suppliers out there I suggest using one of them."

Ok I'll disconnect the oil pump, in that case what should I be looking at as a premix ratio with the 80cc kit?

It was originally a 50cc two stroke. So what are people recommending as far as a (pre) mix ratio (with oil pump still connected) and jet size for the 70cc kit?
I thought I would be ok with the oil pump still on, premix at 60:1 and a #90 mains but it still found a way to seize ...

Thank you all for your help. Yes I will take better care with the warm ups in future. I was running a #90 main jet. Plug is oily, while its apart I fitted an #80 and have an #85 on order. I will do a plug chop when its up and going. Is there a simple way of telling if there is a problem with the crank seal? Also while its apart I will test the oil pump is working properly. With the 80 kit I am running a combo of oil pump and premix. I think oil is not a problem as I am getting some blue smoke out of the pipe.

On closer inspection of the piston it has seized. I only gave the cylinder a casual glance before and that seemed ok. The rings still move freely. The Piston is scuffed on all four corners. This would account for the backfire then not starting. The electrical short is still out there but I need to get the parts and rebuild before addressing that again. There is no earth strap. I have ordered a new kit from Scrappydogs. This scoot has been an expensive P.O.S.

After three days of doing nothing but giggling various unrelated wires for a total of about 10 seconds, the starter motor sprung into life overnight. It has a strong spark but won't start even though I fired start spray down the plug hole. I pulled the cylinder off and it hasn't seized.

Ok I fitted a new starter and relay. It worked like a charm. Started instantly and the problem of the battery draining overnight was fixed as well. Then this happened. And may account for why it starts backfiring when off the stand. Near the suspension stop (see yellow tape) while running the bike started arcing like a spark plug between this and the frame. It eventually blew the fuse and now the starter won't work when I bridge where the fuse went. Is the starter wrecked? This sparking is very strange...

I crossed the terminals, sparks flew and then it blew the fuse.
P.S. Where is this no exhaust stuff coming from, the exhaust hasn't been off during this caper ....??
