Okay, It only happens while hitting the starter, and only about every other day now. Pretty sure it's not the starter clutch. I checked that while replacing the stator/magneto and it worked just fine. hit the starter with the crankcase cover off and the starter clutch wasn't making the noise, it was deeper inside, somewhere behind the chain. I'll try taking the starter off and checking it. How do I upload the pics, do I have to do it one at a time via the attachment feature? here's the new stator vs the old: Attachments:

Dunno, I didn't go over it very close, I just found it, and it seemed to be easier to read than the one in the tech section so I used it to remember where to plug up the pulse generator ( for some reason I had 2 open plugs).

I took the clutch and variator off completely while I was swapping stators, because I also had to replace 2 shattered rollers and re dust the clutch so I'm sure its not those. I tapped the start button while it was all apart and my face was about 6" from the starter motor. The sound is definitely coming from the transmission area. I just haven't taken apart the tranny yet to see. I was hoping there might be a common gear that went out or something. Now that you mention it though, it does kinda sound like when I was a kid and the bearing went out on my rollerblades. I might take a look at these bearings of which you speak edit: The sound it's been making happens with the clutch and variator on or off. ...Also I forgot the most important thing... Thank you for taking the time to read my post and offer suggestions, I do appreciate it.

To get to the back lock you have to remove the screws that attach the back body to the side fairings. Then you remove what i believe is 6 screws 4 up front and 2 in the back. you have to remove the passenger grab plate that holds on the trunk, but you can leave the trunk attached to the plate. the grab plate is mounted with three 11mm or 12mm bolts i can't remember,2 at the side and 1 at the back of the seat. if you unplug the rear lights then you can lift off the back panel and lean it to the left side of the scooter without removing the key tumbler from the panel. The back locking plate attaches right by the rear grab plate bolt and i believe it uses two 10mm bolts. All in all it takes about 15 to 30 minutes to remove, and about the same to put back together. I've done it about 5 time now for different reasons (PDI, magneto replacement, Wiring checks, the like) It's not difficult at all, just a bit time consuming.

Recently my wife's Jonway had some trouble. First off, the scooters been strange from the start. We ordered a 2008 Roketa MC-54b for about $2000 from killer motor sports. (right now they sell for about $900 at Waco Motor Sports) <---NOT a drop shipper, but a real live motorcycle dealer. What we got was a 2011 Johnway yy250t with mp3 player, and a cfmoto engine. Every part on the thing claims March to May of 2011. We really wanted the bigger engine, but hey you win some you loose some. Anyway we had some charging problems, not really unexpected, but about two and a half months into ownership she noticed a strange rattle. At first I though it was the air filter (the screw tab had broken off, and it has been just kinda sitting in the air-box). Well about two weeks ago she has me listen to it and there was indeed a rattle coming from the crankcase on the right side. She revved it up a bit and suddenly we hear a sound that can only be described as a loud KA-CHUNK. At this point the noise completely disappeared and the engine sounded fine again. She's also been having a weird noise when she goes to start the thing, so three days later the weekend hits and I decide to crack open the crankcase and check to see if the starter motor is stripped. (The weird starting noise sounds kinda like a striped gear, but it still starts fine.) When we cracked the case what we found was kinda shocking. One of the stator screws had not been tightened properly at the factory and had been getting hit by the screws on the magneto/flywheel (Thus the rattle). The KA-CHUNK was the sound of the screw getting ripped out of the screw hole. It the proceeded to tear the metal sleeve off of the magneto and shred the magnets and the stator wires to bits. Long story short, this factory defect cost us about $130 after parts and tools. Magneto/stator and impulse from buggypartsnw.com and a $20 gear puller set from harbor freight. Lots of fun replacing it all though . The reason for this post is two-fold. First, I took pictures and would be happy to post a walk-through of the replacement process. (I never found one online) Second, while in the crankcase It sounded like the starter noise was coming not from the starter, but from the transmission area. If anyone might know what would cause such a noise, I would be very grateful to hear. (From what I've seen, most of the transmission gears only cost about $25 and I'd like to fix it before it messes more things up.) Oh, and as a nice bonus, after replacing the charging system, my wife's brakes lights, which had been frighteningly weak before, now shine as bright the led lights on my Yamaha Majesty, and of course no more battery drain issues.
