Thank you all for your thoughts so far.
Learn from other peoples mistakes, as well as your own.
We shall do it then. Just to little information out there on the Newport 50.
You all are right about the speed. Actually what happened before this was.......Newly purchased speed 34 mph. Then it started to just (intermittently) not go over xx speed and get slower as I headed home. Finally top speed was only 10 mph.
I was able to isolate the problem to temperature and then to the CDI. I didn't realize then that the RPM was possibly restricted by the new CDI. The CDI did fix the problem but now top speed is 22mph.
Yep, still in warranty but after the bike shops only answer to the problem was "it doesn't do it for us" after several visits to them in which the last time they crashed it. Sat in their shop for a couple of months waiting for parts. Somehow feel better cutting them loose. They have since stopped selling them.
Studied the web about the 50cc including de-restricting. The overall goal being to be able to flow with traffic reasonably.
Think I will go with the new engine and keep the old stuff for spares as suggested.
Will order today. Keep ya posted.
Later, David

sprocket,
Thanks for the reply. Good information.
I was also hoping that someone who actually purchased this eng. would post their events as well.
Oh, well
I heard from "Mo" which was really nice as I am sure that he has alot on his plate like the rest of us. I interpeted his information to be that it should work. Hate to throw the extra cash on it but its cheaper than a new scooter.
Looks like I will go ahead and buy the eng. and post my events on this board for the use of others. There is really very little about the Newport 50 on the web. I have spent hours looking.
Does anyone object to pictures? I will have to read the newbe information again.
Thanks for the reply, Have a good one

I have a Schwinn Newport 50 and am considering upgrading with the GY6-80. what problems will I most likely run into? And what else do I need to add to completer this install? Looks like a carb, air filter, CDI, for starters. I drive it to work and need a little extra speed to not be a pain to other drivers (in cars). It goes 22mph right now. I have considered re jetting and other up grades but also have thought about just replacing the eng. Ideas ? Thoughts? Comments? Much Thanks Attachments:
