I have a Schwinn Newport 50 and am considering upgrading with the GY6-80. what problems will I most likely run into? And what else do I need to add to completer this install? Looks like a carb, air filter, CDI, for starters. I drive it to work and need a little extra speed to not be a pain to other drivers (in cars). It goes 22mph right now. I have considered re jetting and other up grades but also have thought about just replacing the eng. Ideas ? Thoughts? Comments? Much Thanks Attachments:

You will probably have to modify, perhaps change the rectifier/regulator. While you are at it change the rear brake pads
Air filter and exhausts have minimal impact on the top end.. at best 2-3 mph...re jet only if you have to.
There are thousands of scooters sitting unused in garages because someone thought that re-jetting was a good idea.. it usually isn't. Perhaps adding a BBK or free flow exhaust you might consider it.. but it is mostly trial and error and a huge pain in the butt...

sprocket,
Thanks for the reply. Good information.
I was also hoping that someone who actually purchased this eng. would post their events as well.
Oh, well
I heard from "Mo" which was really nice as I am sure that he has alot on his plate like the rest of us. I interpeted his information to be that it should work. Hate to throw the extra cash on it but its cheaper than a new scooter.
Looks like I will go ahead and buy the eng. and post my events on this board for the use of others. There is really very little about the Newport 50 on the web. I have spent hours looking.
Does anyone object to pictures? I will have to read the newbe information again.
Thanks for the reply, Have a good one

A 50cc should be going faster than 22mph. You may have another problem with that scoot if that is your top speed. JMHO It may be cheaper to get a BBK instead of replacing the engine. Does your scoot have a normal gy6 139qmb engine? If so, you can definitely go more than 22mph. We all love pics!!!!! AFAIK that 80cc should be a direct bolt on replacement. Just use the old parts that don't come with it. Carb, CDI, Airbox etc.... Just my 2 cents.

I would buy a new Carb and CDI rectifier/regulator with the engine.. if your bike maxes out a 22mph there are serious issues with it...something isn't right probably the carb...
You could slap the new engine in and just get 28 mph!!!when you should easily get 45.
Keep the old stuff for spares...

Thank you all for your thoughts so far.
Learn from other peoples mistakes, as well as your own.
We shall do it then. Just to little information out there on the Newport 50.
You all are right about the speed. Actually what happened before this was.......Newly purchased speed 34 mph. Then it started to just (intermittently) not go over xx speed and get slower as I headed home. Finally top speed was only 10 mph.
I was able to isolate the problem to temperature and then to the CDI. I didn't realize then that the RPM was possibly restricted by the new CDI. The CDI did fix the problem but now top speed is 22mph.
Yep, still in warranty but after the bike shops only answer to the problem was "it doesn't do it for us" after several visits to them in which the last time they crashed it. Sat in their shop for a couple of months waiting for parts. Somehow feel better cutting them loose. They have since stopped selling them.
Studied the web about the 50cc including de-restricting. The overall goal being to be able to flow with traffic reasonably.
Think I will go with the new engine and keep the old stuff for spares as suggested.
Will order today. Keep ya posted.
Later, David

To me, it sounds like your speed issue is coming from the CVT. I'd check your contra spring and rollers. Flat spots on the rollers will definitely cause that slow down. And if your contra spring is weak from heat, it'll definitely limit your speed. But then, the new engine comes with a new trans, so...

hi you might try getting an unlimited rev cdi- i have a tomos nitro 50 it did 32 before i put the no rev limit cdi on it it now does 40 to 45 bot runs into 9000 at 45. so my next step is the cvt and clutch good luck with the 80 i thought about doing that but the cops can tell by the id number on block what size it is. if you go with a big bore its harder for them to prove and you dont have to title it.
