Hello,
I am restoring a 1981 Honda express for my wife, I am having an issue with spark. I think I screwed something up trying to charge the new 6v battery with a 12v charger on 2amp. The CDI got rocket hot. I bought a new CDI and new Voltage regulator, and battery. I have not spark, the new cdi lights and flashes as I kick it over, but no spark. I have been looking for a new coil but all on ebay do not have a spaid on the top for the ground that my wire harness plugs into.
some help would be appreciated
Jeff

Well I guess it could be an overall electric issue now. Seems as the tail light would come on with the key, Now it doesn't. I have power to the CDI as it flashes when kicked over, but do not have anything coming out of the Yellow and black that goes to the coil. Is there a fuse someware that I don't know about, or short in the kill switch?
Please chime in lol

It has a fuse usually a 10amp fuse that is probably blown is why nothing comes on now. Also check for a ground wire going to the motor, if the ground wire is missing or not connected to the motor the plug will not fire. Also check the kill switch make sure it is off. It has points in the stator so that could also be a problem. Here is a Service Manual for it, I worked on my neighbors 1981 Honda express a few years ago. He won it at a golf outing it was in a shed for over 20 years(HAHA), But I got it up and running. Alleyoop www.jax184.com/projects/Express/Honda%20Shop%20Manual%20for%20NC50-NA50.pdf

The only fuse I found was the one on the battery, it is good. The kill switch is in run, the two grounds (one on the carb bolt and tail lights area) are both good. I don't have any juice or seems so coming from the yellow black that plugs in the coil.

I would find another MOTOR GROUND NOT the carb, reason being is the INTAKE may be metal but there is a gasket where it mounts to the motor so not a good ground to the motor.
Then the stator is most likely bad, when you kick it there should be VAC 30+ on that wire.

Now the fuse on these are usually the TUBE type you have to test them to see if VOLTAGE is going through the fuse from the battery. They may look good but the wire can be broken on the ends where you cannot see them. So test the fuse on the end to see if voltage is passing through it.
Also some parts for those are hard to find. Alleyoop

Alley thank you so much first off for your help. I seems that ground on the intake was the original location as it was there when I started the rebuild. I can find someware else but does it have to be to the engine? Were is the Stator you talked about located on the bike for the next thing to try. I checked the fuse its good, battery has a small spark when neg and pos touch for a sec.

Here is your moped I annotated where the stator is. Put the GROUND WIRE on one of the STATOR COVER BOLTS. Alleyoop CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO EXPAND IT SO YOU CAN SEE IT BETTER:

Jeff do you know which express you have there are about 4 versions of it and yours may have an ACTUAL CDI like the current scooters have and not points and if so maybe the stator can be found for it since then it would have maybe 4-6 poles on the stator. So take the STATOR COVER OFF and take a picture. Here are the models : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Express#NC50 See if you see something like this: THIS IS WHAT COMES UP AS THE STATOR FOR A 1981 HONDA EXPRESS. IF SO THEY ARE HARD TO FIND.

Nice in very excellent shape, how about the CDI does it have one? If not then that means it has POINTS to trigger the Coil. Alleyoop

You have the NA50 version 2 speed here is where you should find the CDI and COIL and it looks like it has the funky STATOR which are hard to come by. Alleyoop CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO EXPAND IT.

Here is the wiring diagram: Question was it running before you tore into it? I think you may have it just wired wrong. It is AC fired so the CDI gets it's power from the BlACK/RED coming from the stator and that should go on the BOTTOM of the 2 plug of the CDI. Alleyoop WIRING DIAGRAM: HOW CDI WIRING SHOULD BE:
