Can you take a picture of the Original CDI that smoked. The Plug that plugs into the CDI that you bought what are the color wires and what color wires do they go with.
Like RED ON CDI with RED/BLACK from STATOR, GREEN with GREEN etc/..
In other words what are the color wires on the OTHER PLUG that plugs into the CDI PLUG. Alleyoop

Here I numbered the wires from the BLUE CDI and the WIRES from the HARNESS that have to connect. Alleyoop CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO EXPAND IT SO YOU CAN SEE IT BETTER: HARNESS WIRES: 1.Green = Ground 2.Blue/White = Pick Up Coil(Trigger) 3.Black/White = Killwire(killswitch) 4.Black/Red = Power to CDI 5.Black/Yellow = Power wire to COIL.

Check the BOOT CAP that holds the plug. Could be a bad coil, bad boot cap bad plug. The boot caps SCREW onto the COIL WIRE so you can unscrew the boot cap cut about 1/2 inch off the coil wire and now you have a nice clean wire to screw the boot cap back on. Alleyoop
If all that is good then it may be a bad coil. Did you check the TRIGGER WIRE it should register from. .25VAC to 2.5vac ANYWHERE AROUND THOSE NUMBERS THE pick up coil is good. Also check the BLACK AND RED wire from the STATOR that powers the CDI it should read around 30VAC + . If those two pan out then you know it is the CDI or COIL that has a problem. Alleyoop

Try switching the COIL WIRES, some come with the wires or spades switched(all are made in china so expect anything and suspect everything). Make sure the POWER BLACK/RED is coming from the STATOR and the BLUE/WHITE is coming from the TRIGGER(Pickup Coil). Alleyoop

Well back on the job, I bought a stock CDI not the new and improved one. I have nice power coming from the stater and indeed the new cdi did light up, but no power coming out of the yellow so we will see what the stock cdi does.
can I put a 12v battery in? what will that do?

Ok, figured it out was the CDI bought a used original one off ebay. Fired right up.
Now I am working on the headlight.... I don't think the bulb is good as I have power on the white wire blue and green are hooked up didn't light up.
The blue wire on this headlight has a splitter to the little light on the top of the bucket. I looked on ebay and didn't see the exact one. Can someone post the correct headlamp and were to buy it
