Does it matter which way the belt goes? If so from my experience of putting a belt on it looks backwards.  |

(it there were there would be an arrow indicating the direction, like on MC tyres.)

Then it would be my best guess that it would be best to put the belt on with the rotation in the direction of the arrow

Does not sound good, something is banging, and the valves sound really loose. I would take the valve cover off and check the rockers and springs.
