We live at the end of a cul de sac. The next door neighbor always gets a boatload of fireworks from somewhere. I mean SERIOUS fireworks. The kind that rocket way the hell up and produce a huge boom and a huge display. This goes on for about an hour. They are setting a few small things off right now which means they're fixing to get started. The wife and I are headed out there right now. We take lawn chairs down to the end of the driveway....and load up with Off Deep Woods!! Free display....I love it! Rich

One of my side jobs back in the day was selling fireworks. We used to put on a massive (ilegal) display every year.
Ok, bonus points for anyone besides Rich or Alley who can tell us what the fireworks represent.

I don't think they teach history anymore, and I will bet you can stop anyone on the street and nobody will know maybe 1 out of 500. Alleyoop

What burns my arse the most is the idiots who think independence day is the 5th or the 3rd or some other day than the 4th and have a big arse fireworks display on the wrong damn day. George Washington didn't wait till it was convenient to load up the boats and go for it did he?
All the holidays that get put off or advanced to coincide with a week end engineered by assholes not wanting to celebrate but to get a long week end. It just looses the meaning of why we have the holiday. And as long as I am at it how about the banks and car dealers with the "my 50 foot flag is bigger than your flag" That isn't patriotism but assholes trying to sell their stuff instead of respect for our country.

If I remember right, fireworks are to symbolize rockets that were launched for the colonies when we gained our independence. I think that's what I learned "back in the day" but I might be wrong. I think one of the signers of the Declaration wanted a big celebration with parades and all, and he arranged for 13 rockets to be launched, 1 for each colony.

I'll give you .50 cents for that one Gen. You're right as far as you go. And Yes, John Adams said we should be celebrating it.
"John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.
Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed." From History Wiki

On New Years, the sky here has so many fireworks going off it looks like flak over the island. And the airport treats it as such. No aircraft allowed in or out during certain hours. On July 4th, we had 2 shows, and almost no other displays at all.
Hawaii is not big on the 4th. But you won't be able to breathe air without cordite on Dec 31....
