So i read somewhere that the octane used in a 150cc gy6 does not have to be 91 and above since the Chinese and US octane rating systems are different. is this true? and if so what octane is suitable?

Unless your compression ratio is higher than 9.5 use regular. Here's the article.

Probably around 9 to 1. I use 87 octane in all of my scooters and my Chinese motorcycle with no problems.

Highest I've seen a 150 GY6 is 9.25 to 1. If your valves are set right and you're getting spark knock then something weird might be going on. But if it's not spark knocking with regular it's fine. Spark knock is preignition and that is why they add spark retardants to premium. If it's not spark knocking it's fine. Premium gas is not "the good stuff". It is regular gas that has been treated to keep it from ignition from 10 to 1 compression, like a diesel does. Why doesn't a diesel have spark plugs? The compression sets it off. Regular gas has the cleaning additives just like premium. Jack told me that every once in a while the Chinese will grab parts off the shelf they're trying to use up and a motor gets built that has a bigger bore or a taller piston. On the outside they will look exactly the same. Inside they are a freak. An engine like that may indeed spark knock and need premium. But they are 1 in 10,000.

And the book says premium....yes if you are in china use premium, they rate gas different than in the USA, their highest octane is equal to our lowest!
In 56 years of riding I have never ran premium in any motorcycle or scooter with exception on a suz bandit and the only benefit there was the extreme low speed power in the hot summer was smoother and nothing else was better, so most of the time I ran regular.

If I knew at 18 that a man's parts kept growing his entire life, I'd already be rich beyond belief. As for the rest of you... I think more meds are indicated.
