having failed to install my piston rings properly i have scored my cylinder wall and damaged my rings, i had not rode the bike just started up 0 miles, i have been advised to re hone the cylinder wall but for someone to do that its around £50 (85 dollars) and then to replace the gaskets and rings its far cheaper to buy a new kit or buy a standard 50cc kit, im just lost on which one would be appropriate, anyone who is using a 70cc kit can you give me some good points and bad points thanks liam

You still have to hone a new cylinder .

If you only want it to last under 1000 miles don't hone it or gap the rings . You need some soft material to help sest the rings . If the surface is too hard you will not have a softened area for break in .

You at least need to replace the rings and hone. A hone is not an expensive tool to buy. People have even been known to use emery paper to get a cross hatch patern on the cyl. If it was me I would order the rings and see that the piston has been installed correctly. In some of the 2 strokes the piston pin is actually off center by a small amount and is extremely important to be oriented correctly. If it is off the rings will end up broken again. Even if you do not get as long a life out of your kit as if you had every thing put in correctly it will still be a less expensive learning experience.

Some kits probably already come with a honed cylinder. Honing makes a surface that helps "seat" or "break in" the rings but, if the rings aren't gaped it's probably all for nothing because then the rings are very possibly to big in around to properly seat and possibly score the cylinder wall.
However if it's a new, not used kit and the cylinder is already crosshatched i'm not too sure why one would need to hone it.

When I had my Majesty cylinder bored and I came to pick it up the machinist got it off the shelf and honed it right in front of me just to make sure I knew it had been honed. And then I was instructed exactly what he wanted me to do as far as breakin.
I personally would never assemble an engine with out either honing or glaze breaking ever. Even putting one back together with same rings and parts should be honed lightly.
