Oh Matt! You're much too late. I've already decided on the Suzuki if I was going to buy a $4000 two wheeler. Oh wait! The Vespa is five thousand. Isn't that the price of a CBR 300 Honda or Kawasaki 300 Ninja?

Now if the vespa had the steel tub and cowling along with the hand shift....aw crap it would still have all the unsprung weight on the rear and ride like crap.

thats the msrp ,,,the actual otd price is closer to $6000,,,,crazy talk,,,,,this is one of a few reasons i went stella,,,and the mileage was another factor,,,even so the otd price was just a tick off $5000 for the stella at the local genuine dealer,,i got mine for $3348 otd but it's 120 miles away,,still a chunk of change BUT it's a shifter bike YIPPIE!!!!!,,,i get my cake and eat it too,,,,and great mpg,,,genuine says 140mpg,,,i call BU11SH!TAMUS!!!!!!! it'll be 95-100 as a bunch of reviews have come in at,,still not too shabby,,,and scooters definately have their place as KZ says,,,nice to blast around town,,,perfect for the grocery store runs,,,,but as long as i can swing a leg over a bike i'll have manual shift full size motorcycles,,,,i'm on a 350 right now and i'm thrilled with it,,new small displacement entry level street motorcycles are a major bargain right now,,the Sym wolf clas sic is $3000 otd in many dealers,,,,,kawi,,suzi,,,honda and yamaha as well all have real great entry level bikes,,,it's a good time for us bike lovers,,,,if you have cash that is

I just can't believe they want that kind of money for a 155cc scooter. A Honda PCX is just as good, goes maybe faster and will last forever. People may not want to shift but think of the things you can do with the Suzuki for a lot less money. Even worse, the BMS Bi Metro Super Cub clone is about $1400 from anybody and could do just as much as that $5000 Vespa.

And thats it in a nutshell Richard,,,,it's the add campaigns and also the "mystique" that they have cultivated over the decades,,quite like Harley,,,they sell more clothes and gear and accessories than they sell in bikes,,,it's all the name,,,Piaggio makes the vespa they own the name,,,the fly is thousands less expensive than the primavera and will eat the vespa alive,,,it's faster quicker gets way better mileage,,,vespa sold over 200,000 units last year,,,thats a lot of bikes so they have something going on right,,,But the alltime king of motorcycles is the honda cub,,,well over 60,000,000 units sold and they still make them,,,,now that says something,,,,And to answer Rich's question i think you meant a rotary trans,,,it means you can come up to a stoplight and if you are in high gear you can go up one more and you're in first again so you don't have to go back down thru the gears,,,,yeah the Sym wolf is a motorcycle 150cc with a 5 speed box,,,also in the 90mpg c l a s s ,,,and no they don't come in pink hammerhead

Rotary transmissions....I had one of them in the late 60's a bridgestone. Bad bad idea, for the one time you didn't or couldn't shift down it was great but all the rest of the time NfG. One extra poke past 5th and your in neutral at WOT.

Okay, okay, all kidding aside there really is no argument that the Vespa is expensive for what it is. Sure. But so is a Porsche or Ferrari as opposed to a Corvette. You'll get all of the performance out of the Vette that you'll get from the other two, and at a fraction of the price but if you want a Porsche, then you buy a Porsche and the Vette be damned. Marketing and pedigree. Harley, Porsche, any high end brand really.
As my dad told me: "If you want to do well, sell what people need. If you want to be rich sell what they want."
Matt
(For full clarification, my company is based on selling more 'needs' and less 'wants', and I'm also a big Corvette fan FWIW. Someday I may even sell enough 'needs' to buy one. Also, the Honda Cub stands alone as possibly the most important automotive product in history. At least IMHO.)
