I just brought my son's Chinese scooter to a local shop to have the valves adjusted before the weekend. They kindly also charged the battery and checked the charging system (for free) and informed us that work needs to be done on the charging system because it is only putting out 12.6 volts and the batter should be replaced. The battery is now reading 11.6 volts. It is a 50cc Chongqing Astronautic Bashan Motorcycle Manufacturing Co scooter. After the work was done at the shop I noticed on the ride home that the gas gauge, blinkers, horn, tail light, brake light and dash lights don't work anymore. There wasn't time to bring the scooter back before they closed. We haven't used the starter in a few years so we aren't sure if what the shop did affected that system. Also, the headlight does work just fine when the scooter is running as well as the high beam indicator. We plan to bring it back but we were hoping to fix it ourselves so we could ride it this holiday weekend. We checked to see if there was some simple wire that they forgot to connect back up but couldn't find any. What we found was that a wire with an in-line fuse is connected to the negative side of the battery. Could that be the problem? It seems that in all the wiring diagrams I've found on the web for Chinese scooters have the fuse connected to the positive side of the battery not the negative. The fuse is not blown and that wire with the fuse in it has continuity all the way to the ignition switch. I hesitate to switch it from the negative side to the positive side of the battery until I can confirm this with the proper wiring diagram but it seems like this could be the problem. My fear is this is some new way of wiring a scooter that this manufacturer did in 2010. Any advice?

Move the wire with the fuse holder on it to the positive connection on the battery. That's where it is supposed to be. Be prepared to replace the fuse. It may be OK but sometimes they blow and can still look good.

Thanks Gatekeeper for your advice. I may go ahead and move the wire, but I really would like it if someone could first post a wiring diagram specific for our Bashan scooter before I move it. I've viewed quite a few other generic wiring diagrams but not necessarily one for this scooter.

I moved the wire and everything is working perfect now. Yeah!
I still can't believe that the local shop would make an error like that :-(

There are no bike specific diagrams for cheap Chinese scooters. Even if one was included with your manual it would probably be wrong. Welcome to the wonderful world of Chinese scooters. However, these bikes are pretty much the same no matter what the manufacturer is. Ah Bashan Aeronautical...that brings back memories. How do you think I got my handle? Desperately writing into Scoot Dawg for help with a Bashan scooter!
Believe me, Bashan Aero didn't come up with a new wiring scheme. Some bonehead at the shop wired it wrong. Running from the black terminal you just grounded an already grounded circuit. Gate is absolutely correct, the thin red wire with the inline fuse runs from the red terminal to the ignition switch. The switch then energizes a black wire off of the thin red wire when you turn the switch on. Guess where the black wire runs? Dash, tail light, gas gauge, blinkers....uh...pretty much everything you listed. Your battery is low and the charging system anemic. Get the red wire back like it should be and we'll see what the charging voltage is. We may need to address that problem as well.
