It's a bit slow so I thought I would ask a computer related question. In the past I've sent text messages to pagers from work. I'm wondering if this would be possible to send a text to a cell/smart phone from my computer? I don't have a smart phone (yet) and texting from the cell is a pain. A list of all the cool new abbreviations would be helpful as well. Thanks Richard

Well in terms of getting your computer speed up, make sure you don't have a lot of background processes running at startup. If you're running Windows, you can configure your startup items by running MSCONFIG from the start menu (just type it in) and going to the startup tab. Other than that, a cleanup of all things you don't use from your hard drive and then a defragmentation will do you good if it hasn't been done in a LONG time. And you can text from your computer, use a free web service like Textfree.

Also I do computer tune-ups remotely for $35, so if you want me to do that, I can get your computer back to tip-top shape! Just give me a call (248-630-6722) if you're interested.

richard,
Simple answer is YES, you can send text messages to a smart phone thru your email IF you have the sms email address of the phone. To get it, just text a message to your email and the reply address is what you need.

Now why would I want to text myself?
I've got texting on my phone but the only time I've used it was to reply to a text recieved. Others have texted my phone with only the number on Craig's List. So how did they get the sms email address?
Face, I can't finger out how to work that free program that seems to want money.

Richard,
It's about formatting. when a phone gets a message ready to send, it puts into a predesigned format that any phone can read. The format is not generally readable by your PC.
SO, to get the message back and forth to and from a PC, it get's translated at the cell phone company message server into a standard Email format and then sent thru the internet to your email. When you get the message, instead of saying it came from JohnDoe@abc.com, it will say something like 2045551212@sms.verizon.com That is the return address to send a message from your email to the phone's text message application. Got it? Make sense? They have to text you first so you can get the return address.
If you are having computer problems, go to iolo.com and download a free copy of System Mechanic. It's a trail version but it will still find and fix quite a bit of stuff. I use it all the time. It's a very good bit of software and saves you way more trouble than it costs.
Face, Brah, you barking up the wrong tree here looking for PC work. There is at least 5 of us here that are former Network Engineers. Sorry junior. I'll keep you in my prayers for a new job though.

Thanks for the explanation of how it works. I have tried down loading some free ware but unfortunately they come with a load of unwanted programs, shades of AOL. I have also tried those clean-up programs with the same results, they will inject there own favorites and control, and just follow the advice given on other sites by those with experience far beyond mine. They all say the same "do it yourself". My hard drive is defragged and I use Kaspersky PURE. Many closely monitor there texts but not there e-mails.
