Well after a 30 mile bike ride with the pups today... (bike basket cage set up on the way, and dog back pack carrier set up with the top off on the way back)...
.... I had zero energy and still had to go to the white trash ghetto circus tonight ( Walmart ) and so I decided to take my scooter for a ride as part of the "at least twice a week" drive to keep my battery happy.
This was the first time taking it out since I charged up the battery and the mechanic fixed it. He also started it and stopped it a zillion times testing it before a test drive around the block so I knew the battery was " less than thrilled "
So it was my first ride after it sitting for 6 months. I knew I'd need air in the tires and some more gas. The mechanic reminded me to definitely get since the tires felt low. I told him that's what the quarters in the front pocket were for and I'd do it when I go out on it.
The tire as well as the mechanic said to get 35 PSI in the tires. It took a couple times to get it to start but it did and sounded / idled great. I started driving towards Walmart and realized that I forgot the tire air that I was going to get a block from my house. I didn't want to start and stop it until I had my battery charged up so I decided to get the air and more gas when I got home.
I rode it ~ 30 blocks to walmart, parked, came back out to the scooter after and it started up first try. I drove home and stopped at that gas station to put air in the tires.
I added some air and the rear tire read nothing on the air pressure gauge so I added more and still nothing. I've never had a gauge just not pop out so I figured maybe the gauge was broken so I tried the front tire, same thing, nothing. I added more air anyway. Now I was worried that maybe I put too much air in. Before putting quarters in the other air machine, I tried the tire gauge and same thing, neither was reading anything. I put about 75% more air in the rear tire than the front one. I proceeded to go to the gas station attendant inside and ask if they had a tire gauge since both seemed broken. He said no. I asked if he had one for sale. He said no. A man in the store over heard me and said he has a gauge for me to use. I thanked him and took him up on his offer. Rear tire read nothing. Front tire read 15 PSI.
Holy crap, I shouldn't have driven it like that! I was wondering if my rear tire just didn't want to accept air or what. The last time I neglected my scooter it was for a year and when I put air in it read SOMETHING and as I added air the PSI reading kept going up when I checked. So I'm kind of dumbfounded. Maybe its just so low that its taking much longer than I expect to fill it back up? I'm afraid of the thing blowing up in my face.
I drove one block up the street home and as I was about to enter the gate off my driveway I heard " bruuup bruup " (police siren) and I'm getting pulled over in my own driveway. They ask me if I live there. I said ya i rent the house in the back, (2 cop cars in my driveway) the one cop looks around the side of the house and says " ya there's a house back there " i said are you looking for someone? he said well we're just checking scooters. I said okay and gave them my info. They said actually we wanted you to know your rear tire looks dangerously low. I said ya i know i tried to add air at the gas station but the tire gauge wasn't working so im going to try again at another gas station. These guys were parked right by the gas station so they prob saw me leaving it. They said okay get it filled asap. No ticket. At least one of them was hot. I really thought I was in trouble for my intermittently working turning signal relay ( another part on order ) and I made sure that I wouldn't have to take any turns that weren't a turning only lane to get to walmart so I wouldn't have to use the signal lol ( except the first turn out of the driveway and the last turn back into it) I was thinking " just my luck i get pulled over at the last turn to get home ) I'm glad that wasn't it since I'd probably have a hard time getting out of that ticket.
So... ill be getting air next time I take my scooter out at the other gas station near by.
And to end this novel I've written here are my 2 questions...
1) can a tire for some reason sit in the heat so long that it refuses take on air ( I definitely had the air lined up right on the stem ) ? OR Is it just so low that its probably taking forever to read or show increase in PSI? Again afraid of adding too much and it blowing up in my face. I could have sworn I saw the tire getting harder when I was putting air into the rear tire.
2) should I use some sort of tire conditioner to make the tire more " rubbery " ? I'm afraid the heat dried it out. (although it has always been covered so no direct sunlight)
I may be worried about nothing and the tire tread is just fine. It only has 400 ish miles on it. I've just never had this happen with PSI not even reading or going up.
