The reason I filter now is that I almost got rear ended last week by a teen driver who apparently didn't have much experience with his brake pedal. Filtering makes it impossible to get rear ended at a light. Here's an example.......

Lane splitting... illegal in Fl.
On the video shown by Mike932 -> I am less worried about that type of crash here... and much more worried about people getting back in the lane after passing me (illegally over double yellows) and hitting my front while at 'speed' (ie 30 to 35 mph).

The reason I filter now is that I almost got rear ended last week by a teen driver who apparently didn't have much experience with his brake pedal. Filtering makes it impossible to get rear ended at a light. Here's an example....... I have been riding continuously since 1958 (57 years) and have never had any one come close to hitting me in the rear at a stop light. I have seem many many accidents caused by sudden changes of lanes though. Getting rear ended happens and I think I would rather chance that than to take a chance switching lanes, "filtering" or other fancy manuvers. You may not realize it but running between lanes where you have only a few feet of leeway puts you in a position of getting crushed should a car decide to switch or get hit in the side by another one. No matter how careful there is always a stupid out there to get you. Last year I had a friend stopped at a light on his harley and a old bag made a left turn and cut the corner hitting his bike knocking it down and bending the frame. He didn't get a scratch but it cost her insurance company around $15,000 to replace it.

We have some really large shoulder lanes here and we can't use them. If we could, I would never be sitting in traffic all day.
