Do you think WOT everyday will kill EVERY scooter? Or do you think something was wrong with his scooter?

WOT for short periods will not hurt an engine. WOT for long runs will kill an engine.

Oops. Then I am killing my engine. I guess I need a 250cc after all.

Sprocket was a long time member and friend of Scooter Doc. He unfortunately has passed on. He was very knowledgeable on many subjects including the GY6. He was adamant that the GY6 was designed to run at no more than 80% for any length of time. After some experimentation I believe he was correct. RIP Chris, we miss you. Rich

What about my 1998 Yamaha Riva 125cc? Its top speed is 60 mph in calm winds. Should I stay below 50 mph?

I think if you check your speed with a gps you will find it may be a bit less than 60. Most speedometers like that are way optimistic. A 150 is happiest at 45mph and will run at that speed 24/7. No matter what highway your riding you need head room.....that means the ability to go faster than your normal speeds to leave room for an emergency...to escape! My 180cc riva tops out at around 60 on the gps or maybe a little more depending on weather.

I have to ride my scooter over the highway sometimes to get out into town and man its gets pretty scary sometimes. Especially if youre carrying something or someone with you. I dont recommend it honestly. I do it because my scooter is my means of transportation and i dont really have a choice sometimes.

A couple years ago a fellow decided to take a brand new 150 from maine to keywest. He decided to take the freeways/expressways at WOT. No he did not get run over but he did kill the scooter motor some where past halfway there! Maybe a thousand miles maybe less to kill it. In ca there are just way too many nut cases running the roads the way I hear it. When I lived in Il. the speed limit on the expressways was 55 yet if you ran 65 during rush hours you would get ran over, you needed to go 70 or what ever the line of traffic was going at, and it was bumper to bumper damn near as close to each other as a nascar race. Any one out there then on a 150 was on a suicide mission. Looks like vegas got its share of nuts too, the mom who was shot for going to slow is dead dead dead. And the killer is still running the roads of vegas. I would second above comments even thought I rode my Vino 125 pegged all the time and it never blew up in 10yrs. You should not ride a highway in which you cannot keep up with or ride ahead of traffic. Too many angry people out there. They could kill you for spite. I would never go on an Espressway at a lower speed than traffic. If they are going 90 you have to go 90. To ride CA highways you need at least a 350cc that can handle 80 mph for long distances. I remember riding my RD350 to San Diego one time with friends and traffic was cruising at 95 all the way from Newport to SD.

im gonna chime in here... i wouldn't use a scooter on a freeway... even a 250... i am conscious of the small wheels turning ... a motorcycle over 450 or so.. i have no problem... larger wheels.. better acceleration to get out of a jam... i use my scooter for intern errands or visitations etc..
