I was cruising 65-70 mph on my Elite 250 that I just got and after about 15 miles it acted like it was seizing or like the CVT belt was going (started slowing down rapidly like I put on the brakes). Naturally I let off the throttle quick and got in the shoulder. As I came down to 40 mph it seemed fine again. Engine doesn't tap or knock, has plenty of power, drives fine.... Any idea what just happened?

Actually it does sound like it has a knock. Can't hear it at idle but when you get on the throttle it does it. Not bad, but it wasn't there before.

Ohp found the problem. There was NO oil in it. The previous owner told me he changed the oil every 1000 miles and it was just about due for another oil change. So now this nice piece of machinery is trash because no one put any oil in it.

Change the oil run it slow for a bit see what happens,,, I've soft seized a few engines that ran many thousands of miles after,,,, as a side when you said you were interested in getting either the honda or a Chinese scoot I was blasting thru eBay looking for part availability and found more than a few low to medium mile engines with trans and everything for well under $500 ,,, most were under $300 with free ship

Sorry to hear of your situation.
I would do just like cyborg suggests including investing in a replacement engine if you can. Even if the original runs fine you will then be able to keep that little cutie running like forever.

I put 3/4 quart of 20w50 and 1/4 quart engine honey to see if the thick oil would quiet it down. Haven't ran it from a cold start yet but after the 20 mile drive home the knock is much quieter. All but gone. Now it has a tap at idle that turns into kind of a light fast rattle at speed. Its not very loud and its very light sounding, like a valve tap. Seems like it could go on like this for quite a while.

smh you buy a new 2 u scoot, and don't check a thing. tire pressure, oil, rear gear oil, air filter, plug, etc. I wont woulda coulda shoulda, but, i always change all the fluids, plug, filters, air pressure, whenever i buy a new/used anything. but, lessons learned.

I would go with a valve adjustment,,,, it may need it now,,, i would go thru it pretty well ,, a very close inspection indeed,, and I'm not trying to create an I told you so moment,, but for all new members and seasoned vets as well,,, check everything and I mean everything,, I've had brand new bikes straight from the dealer with loose critical bolts and nuts,,, new or used all machines need attention,, and should be top priority
