I have a 1988 125cc Yamaha Riva. I am considering riding it from Fresno to Los Angeles and back again. I would have to take side roads since 125cc is banned from freeways. The route includes mountain roads.
Is this a bad idea or should I go for it?

If it is in good conditon go for it. My riva is only 5 years older and the furthest I normally go is maybe 20 miles. You have to remember it's getting hard to find parts for them. There are a few that have gone cross country with a 50cc chinese scooter. It's pretty much up to you and how confident you are with your ride.

Last year a couple of guys rode two 50cc scooters all the way across the US, from San Francisco to New York. One of the scooters they picked up for a few bills off of Craigslist. Here's some links including videos: goo.gl/deFv85

I love road trips. And so does Cyborg.
If you can carry a few spare fuses and stuff with you, then go for it. Just not alone. And have a breakdown bus following you. Depending on how far your going.

Fresno to LA by car is over 3 hour trip about 210 miles and that is using the good highways. Alleyoop

Thank you for the advice everyone. I would install gps, bring a siphon tube in case I need to beg for gas, bring survival gear, give my route to my girlfriend in case I break down, and ride 45 mph so I don't kill the engine. I would climb the mountain roads about 10 mph to take it easy on the engine. The scooter was only $400, so it would not be the end of the world if I had to ditch it. I am intrigued by the old Ridge Route..... www.ridgeroute.com/history.htmlAlso, do you think high octane gas would help my scooter climb mountain roads?
