What are the most common reasons that a scooter needs to be towed?
Broken CVT belt? flat tire? anything else?

A general lack of preventative maintenance is the major cause of breakdowns for all vehicles......
A china 50cc scooter can easily go 10 to 15 thousand miles with simple regular maintenance and a bit of knowledge of what to look for before a problem arises.
As for being towed, Accidents are the major issue to avoid...... JMHO.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Any one who is not willing to learn what makes them tick and not willing to get his or her fingers greasy does not need a chinese scooter.
I look at them as a do it yourself motorscooter kit.

Horace.......jct842.....I agree with both of you. Would like to add that a common cause of breakdowns, is the emissions systems being left in place. The 6+ feet of hose, vac lines, canisters, and such, are all potential problems.
7,912 miles on my Chinese scoot....not one breakdown....always starts on first or second revolution....has never stalled at a stop.....climbs hills like a mountain goat......carb hasn't been adjusted or cleaned in more than 3 years.....all engine electrics are factorty original (except the plug boot).......and my last tank of gas delivered 94.35 mpg. I attribute the fuel milage bump up, to the new drive belt I installed a week ago......old one ran 6800 miles, and was getting quite narrow, riding lower in the variator, causing increased rpm's.
Oh, by the way guitarman.....both the old, and new Gates Powerlink Premium Belts, were made in China.

I'm just raggin on China because they made so much crap that it's come back to bite them in the backside. They have been getting better over time, but because they were so prolific in the beginning, they have a huge mass of junk floating around giving them a bad name. It's going to take them 20 years to overcome it.
If I could actually get my hands on a NEW bike from them, not a 2005 that's been sitting in the warehouse for 10 years waiting to get bought then things would be different.

You can easily buy a New china scoot...... Some of the newer Motorcycle style 150/250cc are Very cool.
2016 as a matter of fact... Tis the season
The ONLY bad name a china scoot has is from people that do NOT understand you may need to tighten a few bolts. No increased cost of ownership from a dealer/warranty doing what an average Bicycle owner does for reliability anyway.......
My apology!!! Just my 2 cents

I've had two Chino scoots. Both of them did nothing but give me headaches. As soon as I got one thing fixed, something else would break. I was forever fixing them and they spent more time getting worked on than being ridden.
Did I just happen to get the ones made on Friday at 4:30 pm? Possibly, but that doesn't explain the overall crappiness of them.
I saw a Helix clone the other day and except for wiring issues, it's running. It's still got issues, but it's a better built bike overall than what I had. Chino.
It's more the luck of the draw with them and so far the deck is stacked against you. As time goes by, which it has a habit of doing, it will get better. But I just didn't feel like waiting. Now, I ride Jap bikes and I'm as happy as a clam in muddy water.
