Trickle charge the battery which is the way to thoroughly charge a battery.

trickle charge takes like 12 hours. you just said the battery wasn't charged a little while ago.

so the new fuse broke instantly it seems and none of the lights came on, after turning the key You have a short someplace, now you need to check out all the wires you saw smoking pot So you have wires touching together that should not be. Until you find and fix them you will blow fuses. check the headlight wiring that blew and was smoking.

I think he dodged a bullet on this one,,,I think the smoke was the solder from the fuse melting and burning the fuse holder,,,well here's an edit,,,the last two posts showed up while I was writing,,,I agree with Alley on this one once again,,,major short somewhere looks like you have to chase down the wires too see where they are melted together

I think it is the headlight LIVE wire burned and is touching ground.

After reading all of this, would it not be a good idea to come up with a modification that anyone could do that would split out the different systems into a fused curcuit of there own? Wouldn't that help protect against such things happening? Just a thought. If I put this in the wrong place would someone move it. Napa sells fuse boxes in a range of prices and wire etc to do the job.

I would also suggset getting rid of the glass fuse. The mini spade makes a better connection than that cheap fuse holder and you can get one that is "water tight". By the way don't forget to use dialectic grease on all connections. It protects against moisture. Many years of dealing with British cars has taught me much about 12 volt electrics.
