I charged up my battery for my taotao and connected it in the normal way, both reds to the positive, and the black to negative. I bumbled around for a couple of minutes, and was startled to see smoked rolling up from my red wires on the positive post. I took them off as fast as I could, but they are scorched, especially the one with the fuse. When I oped the fuse box, both metal ends were detached from the glass tube.
Why would this have happened? I appreciate the input. I need to fix this but I dont want it breaking over and over again.

you have a dead short somewhere in the positive lead off the battery,,wires rubbed thru the insulation on a boy part or something sharp on the frame,,,i'm surprised the fuse didn't catch it

Find the problem first then repair it. Blindly taping may do it but much better to find it first. If you have two red wires on the positive post you can find out which one is causing the problem then trace it out.

Well the THICK RED WIRE goes to the SOLENOID(WHICH IF NOT SITTING RIGHT THE TERMINAL COULD BE TOUCHING GROUND) So FIRST CHECK THE SOLENOID FOLLOW THE THICK RED WIRE to the SOLENOID and SEE IF THE TERMINAL On the SOLENOID IS TOUCHING GROUND OR SOME OTHER WIRE. Take a picture of your battery area and SOLENOID. scooterdoc.proboards.com/thread/11566/easy-picture-posting

I guess the real problem is I don't know what Im looking for.Do I have to take the wire harness off and inspect every wire? Why would this just have suddenly happened?

Like I said check the SOLENOID here is what it looks like and JUST FOLLOW THE THICK RED WIRE and it will connect to the SOLENOID. SEE THE TERMINALS MAKE SURE THE TERMINAL WITH THE RED WIRE IS NOT TOUCHING ANY METAL.
