Here is a picture of the right side of my engine. Also I am including a picture of what I think is the starter. Alley, you said to remove the cover on the right side of the engine. Do I need to remove the cover on the left side of my engine? If that is my starter is it possible I caused the issue with the starter by bumping it or something when I put the new rear tire on?

Just remove the right side cover, what you want is on the right side. FIRST drain the oil, oil is behind the cover. The first picture is to small I cannot see if that is a starter or not. Starter looks like this Alleyoop

Mr. Oop.
The oil has been drained and the bolts have been removed. The cover is still stuck to the gasket & block. What is the best way to separate these without damaging anything?

Give it some taps around with a rubber mallet or wood mallet or something that has maybe rubber on it to break the hold then you can maybe get a screwdriver or spackling or scraper knife to pry it off.

I am not 100% sure if the starter motor is where I suspected it was but I still think that it is. I am trying to post a larger version of my earlier picture so you can see it better. It is hard to see since it is covered in mud. I'll try hitting it with something rubber or wood tomorrow and see if that works. I am reluctant to use a screwdriver or something similar in the crack and damage the gasket or scratch the metal.

Here I found your motor and it is the starter where you believe it is. It would be hard to have hit it but you can check it and make sure it is straight; HERE IS YOUR MOTOR and you can see the starter right there on top:

For picture try using the INSERT IMAGE on the bottom of where you are posting IT GIVES you the option to RESIZE the pic select 640X480
On the Starter CHECK to make sure the two bolts that hold it in place are not loose. Alleyoop

Okay we the cover is off. Please see the attached pictures. I also found bits of metal in the bottom of the cover once it was removed. I am also attaching a picture of them. I'm pretty sure that is a bad thing. What next Alley?

The bits of metal are probably from the Clutch probably parts of the springs etc.. Well as you can see the IDLER GEAR up on the top left. THE STARTER turns that and it then engages the gears teeth you see sticking out and turns the whole flywheel and crank. But the Clutch attached to it is slipping and is not grabbing so all you hear is teeth meshing. Sounds like a chain. And you can even see it for yourself just like in the VIDEO i put up crank it for a second and you will see that it is NOT turning the FLYWHEEL. Alleyoop CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO SEE WHAT I WROTE
