You should find pressure on side wall and lower a couple of PSI till you dial it in for your type of riding

Yes recommended inflation pressure is on the tire sidewall

I always thought that was the maximum inflation pressure of the tire.

Yes but it's aa working point to start with then adjust a little lower till you get the handling the way you need it everyone is different.

What I have always done is to take into account is how they handle and do they get warm. After riding a while the tires need to be warm to the touch. If they remain cool you may just have more air than you need. You don't want them getting overly hot either. Cold tires do not grip well, look at the Nascar drivers trying to heat up tires while behind the pace car, zigzag back and forth. How do they do in a panic stop?

I look for longevity of the tire. A pound or two over recommended doesn't bother me. I'm a fat arse, so a little extra helps save tire wear, IMO.

So what pressures do you guys like on a 250cc scooter? I realise your answers will vary.

.As I said before looks for handling and that to each is on nobody's the same look on side wall t. And sake away 5 psi see if you like it remember the harder, pressure will mean a hard ride and many shakes will loosen may parts. But tire will last longer and should get better mpg

There are a lot of variables for the correct pressure. The scooter, the total weight and most importantly the brand and model of tires. You can start with the max tire pressure and ride it then lower by 5 lbs and ride again and so on until you find the best stability.
I am not sure there is any benefit at all with too high a pressure. Scooter and motorcycle tires are pretty much round on the bottom where they contact the road. The more air the less of the tire contacts the road. The tire will only wear if it touches the road. Less air = more contact. It does take more gas with a softer tire than a hard one. A hard tire will never preform the way the maker designed it to. Too soft and the ride will get squirrely. Some where in between is where your tire can do the job it was designed for. I have always used pirelli tires as a scooter needs more grip. A scooter will have to lean more on a given curve than a tall wheeled motorcycle. A fat front tire will also take more lean angle.

What do the owners manuals say about tire pressure for these things?

Manual has nothing to do with it,,, it's the tire maker that sets the recommended running pressure

It's still up to you to find where your scooter rides best at as far as tire pressure. What makes some one else happy doesn't mean you will like it. Cold tires do not grip the road well.
