I got my annual scooter insurance bill in the mail this week and noticed that the rate had increased over 20% over last year! I was appalled. I went to State Farm and Allstate both and they were both higher still than American Family.
So, I went to American Family and asked if they could do anything about the rate and at first he says they don't set the rates yada yada yada and that he can't override them. I told him, well I noticed that I don't have state minimum, can the coverages be altered thereby changing the cost. I was astounded. At $100,000/300,000 it was $174/yr but drop down to $50,000/100,000 and it was $86/yr. State Minimum is $25,000/50,000 so I'm still above that.
So anyhow, it pays to ask questions!

given the opportunity, most any insurance agent is going to see that you have as much coverage as you can get. of course their profits go up when you have all that coverage. I don't ride my carino a lot and I opted for min coverage as the state requires....$34 a year. It would bother me if I had an expensive policy and still didn't ride it a lot/ john

I've had insurance with Progressive for a couple of years, and this year they wanted over $300 for just one scooter. I switched to Foremost and got the exact same coverage for less than half of what Progressive wanted. Sometimes I wonder if insurance companies give us a cheaper rate at first just to get us to switch. I found out Foremost was recommended by AARP for motorcycle insurance so I got a quote, and it sure paid off for me.

Just remember ANYTHING that is indorsed by AARP, AARP gets a kickback. So any company that is using AARP to gain more business you will find that their Preimums are high because the company has to fork over part of the preimum to AARP.
And yes most will give you a low price the first year then hit you with a bump when it has to be renewed. Also they have access to the records of your previous insurers so they know your record and know if your high risk or not. Alleyoop

My premium with Foremost was much lower than with Progressive. I never went through AARP to get the insurance with Foremost. I wasn't even a member. I just googled 'aarp recommends motorcycle insurance' or something like that and found out that they recommended Foremost.. I went to Foremost directly for the quote. In fact, when I cancelled my insurance with Progressive through my independent agent, I told them I was switching to Foremost. They said they sold Foremost insurance, don't know why they gave me Progressive then. They didn't even realize that Foremost offered motorcycle insurance, they were using Foremost for mobile home insurance. They did a quote for me also and it would have been about the same price as me going direct through Foremost myself. I had already switched, so told them when my first year is up, I might go back to them and get the Foremost insurance through them.

Yep, Insurance are a pain, usually if you go through an agent it will cost you more. After all the agent gets a cut for every customer that buys from him. Now if you buy online if it is not cheaper then it is not a good deal. The online is leaving the middleman out. But that also could be screwy because the online company may be contracted out by the insurance company and therefore the onlline people are getting a cut. Best to just google for the stars and find the lowest price for the best coverage. Alleyoop

I'm almost afraid to see what my premium will be when it comes due again next year though, with the games that insurance companies play. Will have to wait and see.
