Are those fancy slider weights better, or just more expensive? And if I want to increase the weight from existing for more high end speed, what kind of weight increase is reasonable? One gram? Five grams?

I don't know yet. I'm going to see tomorrow. I'm tired of this kicking and bucking under 10mph. I'll start here, I have a new belt, I'll order new weights when I figure out what I want.

I'm tired of this kicking and bucking under 10mph. . That is more than likely a cruded up clutch. Also cleaning the variator helps./ I found when I had that majesty 400 if I rode easy it came on quicker. The fix was to take off the clutch bell and sand it out with 80 grit paper. Along with kicking and bucking and made various sounds of distress. At the last I just got pissed and locked up the back brake and hit the throttle for a few seconds, then it would act right for a bit. God I don't miss that pos at all. I racked up more complaints on that particular machine than every other I have had in 58 years of riding!

I think jct is on it ,,,a glazed or semi glazed clutch bell and pads act that way

I tried the lock the brakes and spin it up, that helped a lot. I still want to get more speed, I top out at 60mph. I have a new belt, and I want to increase the weights. I don't know why I need to know what's in there to guess what kind of increase I need. Let's just say for argument I have 20oz weights. If I want to go with heavier weights, how much do I go? One gram, two grams, five grams?

I couldn't get the variator off, it's stuck. I got the outside off, but the splined thing is stuck. I soaked it with PB Blaster and put it back together, maybe it will be more agreeable next time. I sanded the clutch bell and the shoes. It doesn't kick like a mule now, very smooth. Thanks for the info. I talked to the local shop, and he said once he has had to go so far as cutting that thing off, but usually soaking it with PB Blaster works for him. Any advice on that?

Accepted procedure to go faster with a cvt is to take a marking pen and draw lines on inside of the variator from axle or bottom to the top. Idea is to see how high the belt goes at max throttle on highway. The belt will erase those lines anywhere it goes to. If it goes all the way to the top the only way for more speed is more power and rpms in engine. If it doesn't get to the top, heavier weights will force it up higher. The reason you should state what it has in it now is so that some one who has already done it can let you know what they put in theirs to get to the top. A light weight rider and a heavy weight rider will have different belt heights with all else equal.
I have not done it with a helix so I can't help with yours. Guessing if the belt isn't getting to the top a jump up of a couple grams should help. It will slow acceleration though.

There's a couple things to consider,,,on another forum a member trimmed a few mm's off the end of the variator boss so the halves came together better to get the belt to go to the top,,,another thing you may want to look at is sometimes the throttle cable isn't set up correctly and wide open at the twist grip isn't wide open at the carb,,,and just 1/4 to 3/8 inch makes all the difference when trying to get the carb to open up all the way

Right now I'm stuck. My variator won't come off, it's stuck. I tried putting a wheel puller on the inside, and just give it a little tug, nothing. I put a socket over the shaft and gave that inner sleeve a couple taps, nothing. I don't even know what the wights are because I can't get it off. I'll look at the carb and see if it's opening all the way, thanks.

Hit the shaft behind the nut with pb blaster on any good penetrating oil and let it sit for a few hours,,, give the side of it a sharp rap with a small hammer and it should pop off

The nut came off just fine, the outside cone came off. That thing with splines on the shaft is stuck, and the variator can't come off.

I'd still soak the shaft and boss with a good penatrating oil and try a little heat as well,,,a sharp rap with a SMALL HAMMER just to jar it,,,don't go blastin it with a framing hammer ( I know you're thinkin about it),,,and then the puller it should come off

I'll tackle it again some day. I sprayed it with PB Blaster again and again over about 45 minutes, put it back together. Hopefully it will soak in and break up the crap. Thanks!

Sounds like some one went nutz with an impact when it was put on last. There is one thing that might be a tad better than pb blaster, that is acetone with a tiny bit of tranny fluid added.
Because the variator has been jambed up on that shaft it might be why you are having problems with it shifting all the way out.
