Has anyone out there done any research on the advantage/disadvantage of running these engines WITHOUT that plastic box around the motor? Mine is partially melted and full of crap, and my first instinct is to scrap the thing. Other air-cooled bikes don't have anything around them!?!

I will be the first one to say, please don't run it without the shrouds. The fins on these engines are going left to right, the fins on an air cooled motorcycle are verticle. Unless you can drive sideways the air won't flow enough to keep the engine cool. Yeah, it will run without it. Hell, it MIGHT run like that ( no shroud ) for a while. However the shroud is there to help direct air flow from the fan on he flywheel to the head and cylinder There will probably be someone that I'll tell you to go ahead an dtake it of, that it won't hurt. It is after all, your machine. You may do whatever you lease with it. Would I drive my air cooled scoot with no cowels? Hell no. The fan on the flywheel is the only thing that is working to keep these engines cool. Without those ugly arse plastic pieces ou have no cooling. Even lawnmowers use a fan cowel to direct air over the engine.

Please, do yourself a favor and research the " air cooled bikes without fan shrouds". Pay close attention to the fins both cylinder. They are designed to maximize airflow from the bike being driven. They are vertical and allow maximum air flow while moving Engines designed to have a fan cowel will have finss in a side to side pattern. Just my .02¢

You will kill your engine. A gy6 is a fan cooled engine and needs every bit of air that little fan can make.
